The Night of the Museums triggers the number of attendees to 16,245, surpassing those registered in previous years and confirming this event as a subregional cultural reference (21/05/2018)

The City Council is committed to adding new scenarios in future editions, thanks to the progress of the reconstruction and rehabilitation works.

The churches of San Pedro and Santa María, whose works are very advanced, could be integrated into the events next year.

The Councilor for Culture in the City of Lorca, Agustín Llamas, reported that the different stages, museums and cultural spaces that developed activities last Saturday on the occasion of the Night of the Museums, recorded a total influx of 16,245 people, which constitutes an absolute record in all the celebrated editions of this event.

We are talking about a figure that confirms the indisputable success of this cultural event, which not only feeds Lorca assistants, but this year we have confirmed that it has been established as a cultural reference for hundreds of visitors from other bordering regions that year after year they come to our city to enjoy the multiple events that fill our urban spaces of life, spectacle and activities.

It is a reality that also directly benefits our catering establishments, whose terraces were full throughout the day.

Agustín Llamas has anticipated that now that thanks to the impulse of this Municipal Executive and the groups and associations that carried out activities and exhibitions in the city, the Night of the Museums has consolidated as a reference, we must continue to promote it and grow in quality .

This year, for example, visits have been added that have had an extraordinary acceptance, as is the case of the Fuente del Oro, recently remodeled thanks to the investment of the Regional Government, as well as the first phase of rooms of the Palacio de Guevara, which looks more splendid than ever thanks to the restoration work that is allowing its furniture, art gallery and furnishings to recover their original location.

The Councilor for Culture has said that the Night of the Museums, as the recovery of Lorca's monumental heritage, seriously affected by the 2011 earthquakes, continues to advance, adding scenarios and resources.

In fact for next year we will tell, if there are no unforeseen events, with the church of Santa Maria, a temple that is currently under construction thanks to an investment of more than one million euros from the Government of Spain that is providing the temple with a new structure of wooden trusses, large, which will support the new roof consisting of panels, also made of wood, and will be crowned with tiles consistent with the environment in which the church is located, respecting the aesthetic line of this type of temples .

We are talking about a Church, which began to be built in the 15th century and was finished in the 18th century with the incorporation of the Rococo style façade. It did not have a roof since the Civil War, when it was looted and burned down.

The dismantling of the bell tower has also been completed, proceeding to equip it with new elements that give it greater structural security, implementing a battery of fasteners based on the incorporation of special tensors to avoid the degradation that this tower was suffering. that, after the earthquakes of 2011, had worsened to the point of seriously compromising its stability.

Llamas Gómez has pointed out that another enclave that could be added to the catalog of scenarios of the Night of Museums next year is the church of San Pedro, which is benefiting from a recovery works thanks to which it has managed to rescue the Original access vault and re-raise its main stone pillar.

It is a project that involves an investment of close to 600,000 euros, and that will allow Lorca to recover an authentic heritage jewel.

The interior of the temple will recreate the original virtually.
