The works of the new waste management glass of Barranco Hondo will culminate this month and will place Lorca as a national treatment and recovery model (11/07/2018)

Investments in these facilities will save 5.8 million euros annually.

The new glass is expected to have a useful life of around 40 years, 55% more efficient than the previous one, with an increase in capacity of 254%.

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, along with the delegated councilor of Limusa, Juan Francisco Martínez, has supervised the notable advances and improvements with respect to the original project that have been registered throughout the execution of the works corresponding to the new glass for the treatment of urban waste.

It is a work of great importance and strategic nature, whose benefits will be reflected throughout the municipality.

The Mayor has indicated that the justification for undertaking this work arises from the need to increase the storage capacity of Urban Solid Waste (RSU) of the Barranco Hondo Management Center and proceed to the closure of the current container vessel.

The works are being executed based on legal criteria and current environmental standards.

The first mayor recalled that the new glass of the CGR will be 55% more efficient and cheaper than the previous one, multiply by 4 its useful life and places Lorca as a national model in waste treatment.

The investments in Barranco Hondo will allow Lorca to save annually 5,857,456.44 euros between travel costs and handling of urban waste.

Among all Lorca we are raising a new Lorca, which marks the challenge of looking to the future by executing the infrastructures that our social groups and their own reality showed.

In this way, it is so important in our city model to have more and better roads, water supply networks and renovated services, a modern Fair and Congress Center, as well as a recovered historical heritage, safety infrastructures, and streets and neighborhoods properly prepared and equipped, such as having facilities in which the waste we generate is treated in the most appropriate manner.

The total capacity of the facility is 2,826,000 m3.

The increase compared to the current glass, which has served 9 years and 7 months, is 254%.

The amount of the new glass is 2,253,711.14 euros, 55.46% cheaper than the previous one.

In fact, its efficiency also round this amount, exactly 55.58%, since the capacity of this cell 3 is estimated close to 2 million tons, compared to the current 562,000.

The entry into operation of this infrastructure is expected on January 8, 2019 and its duration is estimated in about 40 years, taking into account the data verified in the history of urban waste disposal in the last 18 years.

The landfill will be divided into three sub-cells, so that filling will be done in phases, working on a third of the surface.

In this way the production of leachates is minimized.

Thanks to this project is going to solve an environmental problem of treatment and recovery of waste generated in family and industrial areas, providing the municipality with an area of two million square meters in which to store the waste generated by the population at all levels, in addition to ensuring the recovery of the valuable material for recycling, paper, cardboard, glass, organic matter, packaging, etc.

As general data of the work we must mention the following:
