IU: "The lamentable image of the Lorca littoral spread in Europe is the result of the irresponsibility of the PP" (31/10/2018)

Gloria Martín recalled that last May his Municipal Group raised a motion to the Plenary with the aim of the City Council evaluating and addressing the environmental threats arising from the plastic waste on the Lorca coast and that it was "knocked down" in its main proposals

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martin, lamented that after the report by journalist Simon Reeve, broadcast on prime time on the British channel BBC, "the image that Europe now has of beaches like Cala Blanca, be it that of layers and layers of plastic that deteriorate without any control the protected spaces of the Regional Park of Cabo Cope and Puntas de Calnegre ".

The mayor highlighted the surprise face of Reeve when he asks if the agricultural companies are not obliged by law to recycle plastic from greenhouses.

In this regard, Martin recalled that last May, IU-Green Lorca raised a motion to the Plenary in order for the City Council to assess and address the environmental threats arising from the plastic waste in the Lorca.

But nevertheless,

In fact, the Partido Popular -which holds an absolute majority in the Consistory- approved a single point, while positioning itself against a whole battery of measures that included, for example, the implementation of a subsidized pilot program aimed at farmers in the region. environment, in order to promote sustainable practices and alternatives to the use of polyethylene.

The PP also made it impossible for the regional government to be urged, through the University of Murcia, to establish a support program aimed at plastic production companies in Lorca, in order to promote research, development and innovation in the field of bioplastics.

Martín also asked the Consistory to contact companies specialized in the collection of plastics from agriculture and its recycling in order to establish a collaboration agreement through which farmers can meet their needs for collection, transport and waste management generated by their activity.

A point that was also rejected by the PP.

Another proposal that was "knocked down" by the PP was that, in order to comply with Law 11/1997, of April 24, on Containers and Packaging Waste, the City Council urged agricultural companies and small farmers with activity in the surroundings of the Regional Park of Cabo Cope and Puntas de Calnegre to establish a Deposit, Return and Return System (SDDR) or participate in an Integrated Management System (SIG) of agricultural packaging for proper environmental treatment, in a similar way to what is done with phytosanitary containers (SIGFITO).

"Everything was in that the City will carry out a campaign of awareness on the highly harmful effects of plastic waste among Lorca farmers," explained Martin, "as if the distribution of brochures or the realization of a few talks would solve this tremendous problem. "
