The Spokesman of the PSOE in the City of Lorca, Diego José Mateosha demanded from the City of Lorca and Autonomous Community the start of an immediate campaign to combat the caterpillar processionary pine, and known as barrenillos del pino ('Tomicus destruens' and' Orthotomicus erosus') which, together with the drought, puts the survival of the large pine mass in Lorca at risk, "which in the municipality is around 3,000 hectares distributed between Peñarrubia, Sierra del Caño and Almenara, among others .

Diego José Mateos has shown that "the lack of rain and high temperatures continue to put at risk the forest area of ​​the Guadalentín valley, being particularly serious the situation that lives the municipality of Lorca, seriously affected by the drought and by different pests "

The councilor of the PSOE has warned that this insect attacks the bark of trees, slowing their growth, and also produces allergic reactions to humans and animals by their stinging hairs, present in the air, "in the case of the processionary. , on the other hand, they take advantage of the weakness of the trees, introducing themselves between the bark and the wood of the trees, where they feed and finish using the sap-carrying vessels, causing the death of the trees, since they dry up. "

Therefore, Mateos requires Lorca City Council and CARM to intensify protocols for prevention and action against this plague, which continues to ravage the public forests of the region.

The spokesman of the PSOE has returned to demand the application of periodic and routine biological treatments in order to prevent the appearance of these insects.

The elimination of the residues of this insect to prevent its spread, the debarking of the affected specimens or the installation of massive capture traps, are some of the measures also claimed by the PSOE Lorca.

Simultaneously, the PSOE has once again complained to the General Directorate of the Natural Environment of the CARM, to launch actions aimed at reducing the risk of forest fires in the mountains, and that go through the cleaning and care of forests or maintenance of firebreaks, among other measures.

Lorca is still one of the municipalities in the Region of Murcia that lack a specific prevention and emergency plan for forest fires.

The PSOE already requested the elaboration of a plan of these characteristics in the plenary session of last June.
