The PSOE proposes to illuminate the roundabouts and the accesses to the city of Lorca from the motorways to improve road safety (12/11/2018)

The Socialists consider that the installation of public lighting is necessary to improve road safety at the accesses to Lorca from high-capacity roads such as the A-7 (Mediterranean Highway) and the RM-11 (Lorca-Águilas), both in the links as in the roundabouts and urban sections that connect the highways with the city, such as the bike path that connects Ronda Sur with the Parque Almenara shopping center.

The councilor of the Municipal Socialist Group in the City of Lorca, David Romera, has proposed to improve road safety in the links, roundabouts and urban stretches of access to the city of Lorca from high-capacity roads such as the A-7 (Highway of the Mediterranean) and the RM-11 (divided route Lorca-Águilas).

Currently, says the socialist mayor, "there are large stretches of access to Lorca whose ownership corresponds to the Ministry of Development or the Autonomous Community of Murcia that do not have street lighting despite the high traffic that support each day , especially at peak times, which constitutes a risk for drivers ", as the studies carried out by the Automobile Associations indicate that" the lack of lighting on the roads reduces the visual acuity of the drivers by 70% ", which increases the risk of suffering a traffic accident, "especially in urban or peri-urban areas where the density of traffic is high, such as access to the urban area of Lorca, given that the feeling of isolation in dark areas during driving is greater" .

Romera explains in this regard "that the lighting access to Lorca has to become a priority for the PP Government team in order to improve road safety in the city," and that therefore, "must claim both the Ministry of Promotion as to the Autonomous Community that are drafted and executed the corresponding projects to illuminate the accesses to the city ".

Statistics indicate that 52% of traffic accidents occur at night and on unlit roads;

"it is proven that the lighting of the road axes provides greater safety to the users thereof".

In Lorca "we have a very clear example in the old Carretera de Águilas, whose rectilinear stretch until Purias has public lighting."

Other data show that traffic accidents are reduced by 30 to 40% on illuminated roads, and their severity is reduced by six times.

The Socialists say that it is necessary to illuminate the following accesses and urban stretches in Lorca.

On the one hand, with respect to the RM-11 (via Lorca-Águilas split), it is necessary to provide public lighting for the existing urban stretch between the Parque Almenara Shopping Center and the Ronda Sur roundabout, which means acting on a shorter length at 2,000 meters;

here the average daily traffic is in more than 15,000 vehicles.

In the same way, it is also necessary to illuminate the urban stretch of the Caravaca road existing between the roundabout of the junction with the Carretera de Zarzadilla de Totana and the A-7, crossing the industrial estate of Serrata, in a length of 2,500 meters.

Both roads are of autonomous ownership.

Lighting that, hope, is contemplated in the remodeling project planned for the Caravaca highway area.

On the other hand, in regard to the A-7, dorsal turn of the Mediterranean Corridor, whose average daily traffic passing through Lorca is close to 30,000 vehicles, it is necessary to illuminate the following places, dependent on the Ministry of Development : in the access by the Caravaca Highway towards the San Cristóbal neighborhood, it is necessary to install lampposts in the links (approximately 600 meters long) and in the two roundabouts of entrance and exit, including the connection between both;

In the access by San Antonio, it is necessary to illuminate both the links (1,400 meters) and the 500-meter stretch that exists between the exit of the highway and the roundabout of San Antonio that connects with the RM-11;

in the access from Murcia, it is necessary to illuminate part of the four connections of connection with the road of Murcia, since there are two that are illuminated at night "so it is perfectly verifiable how a high traffic path of vehicles equipped with lighting Nightlife provides security to road users. "

Romera adds the need to implement night lighting systems in the layout of the A-7 as it passes through the urban area of Lorca, at least between the exits Lorca-Centro (by Carretera de Caravaca) and Lorca-Sur ( Barrio de San Antonio) given the special nature of the section (pages 592 to 596) as it follows a ramp with a certain slope, over the viaduct that overrun the Guadalentín river bed, and through the entrances and exits of the tunnels through which this infrastructure runs under the Sierra del Caño, because of the four accesses, only one (the entrance to Murcia) has street lighting and this is clearly insufficient, despite being one of the sections with the highest traffic of vehicles the Region of Murcia when putting Levante in communication with Andalusia.

From there, and concludes the socialist mayor, from the Municipal Socialist Group to ask the PP Government team to urge the competent administrations, both the Ministry of Development and the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, "to be initiate the procedures that allow to provide public lighting the main accesses to Lorca from the highways to improve road safety of the thousands of users who use them every day, as can be seen in many other Spanish locations such as the urban environment of the city of Murcia".
