The councilor of Left-United Greens in the City council of Lorca, Gloria Martin, will present / display to the ordinary Municipal Plenary of the month of January a motion for the promotion and the development of the cattle ranch and the ecological agriculture, whose surface of crop in the Region is of 80,000 hectares, and that in Lorca is concentrated mainly in the Highlands.
Martín said that more and more autonomous communities and cities favor the incorporation of organic products, fresh, local and seasonal in the menu of school canteens and sociosanitarios, so aspires that the Region of Murcia is incorporated into these practices that are already performed in the Canary Islands, Valencia, Navarra, Madrid, Zaragoza, Barcelona or Pamplona.
The objective is to promote the local consumption of this type of product among the 13,000 schoolchildren who make use of the canteens of their schools, promoting the culture of responsible nutrition from a social and environmental point of view from an early age.
The more than 3,800 users of the Murcian Health Service hospitalized, who eat every day in the hospitals of the Region, would also be recipients of this measure.
In this regard, Martin recalled that the new contract for the feeding service of patients of the Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca, which came into force last June, contemplates the boost of the consumption of organic fruit and vegetables.
"If the Murcian Health Service (SMS) has demanded this measure in the contract specifications for this hospital in Murcia, we see no inconvenience in that it is also done in the rest of the centers of the Region," he said.
For the mayor of IU Verdes, it is not only about introducing organic food into the menus of schoolchildren or admitted patients, but also to encourage actions aimed at respecting the environment, as the new Public Procurement Law sets out.
"We can not condemn our organic farmers and ranchers to sell on their farms or house by house," said Martin, so he opted for the Public Administrations to contribute to "open market" to this type of products, whose economic and environmental "are extended to the communities where they are applied".
Thus, Martín explained that organic agriculture and livestock promote the creation of employment opportunities and create wealth.
There is also a high compatibility of ecological farms with other types of rural businesses, such as companies dedicated to ecotourism and those that promote new areas of research related to the protection of the natural environment, animal welfare or renewable resources.
In addition, this production model helps achieve greater environmental sustainability by contributing to the fight against desertification;
favoring the retention of water without contaminating the aquifers;
fostering biodiversity;
maintaining the habitats of wild animals;
respecting the natural cycles of crops;
recycling nutrients and optimally using natural resources.
"Ecological livestock and agriculture respect the balance of nature, contributing to the preservation of ecosystems and sustainable rural development, and therefore must be promoted by public authorities," said Martín.
On the other hand, only in 2016, the consumption of eco foods generated sales of 33,500 million euros in Europe, 11.4% more than the previous year, which consolidates it as the second most important market after the United States. United.
It stands out the growth of 22% of France, with an invoice by value of 6.736 million euros, only behind Germany (9.478 million euros) and in front of Italy (2.644 million euros).

Therefore, the IU motion will also urge the Consistory to create a market of organic products that will serve as distribution platform, where local producers can display and sell their products directly to the individual consumer and collective catering centers.
In addition, it will propose the creation of an advisory office for this type of producers, the implementation of a public awareness campaign as well as employment workshops that allow young unemployed people with sensitivity to the rural world the possibility of training in an emerging sector with clear opportunities for economic development.
All this under the framework of a Local Plan for the Promotion of Ecological Agriculture and Livestock, which should include an economic endowment in the annual municipal budgets.
