The City Council begins the installation of a system of awnings to generate shaded areas and reduce heat in the streets Corredera, Pío XII, Alporchones and Almirante Aguilar (20/05/2019)

The placement of the awnings has begun at the confluence of the Corredera with Plaza de la Concordia, after the work of fixing the metal supports in the nearby buildings.

The City of Lorca has begun the implementation of a pilot action in streets of the historic center by installing awnings with the aim of reducing the effects of heat waves and urban heat islands.

This will create shadow corridors by installing awnings in several commercial areas and large pedestrian traffic in the historic center of Lorca, such as Corredera, Pío XII, Alporchones and Almirante Aguilar.

This experience will be carried out in the months of May, June, July, August, September and part of the month of October during a period of 3 years, until 2021, to try to measure the temperature and quantify the benefits obtained for the population and the commercial area of these emblematic streets located in the historic center of Lorca.

The Social Council of the City approved a few months ago unanimously the creation of a Citizen Participation Table for the drafting of the Adaptation to Climate Change Plan "Project Life Adaptate".

It is a European environmental initiative whose purpose is to adopt measures to combat climate change at the local level.

This pilot project aims to reduce the risks related to climate in the daily life of the neighbors by decreasing the ambient temperature in the area, making the city more pleasant for pedestrians.

Once the trial period has ended, it will be possible to determine if the installation of the awnings in Corredera Street and adjacent streets, can become a measure of adaptation to climate change that the municipality itself can adopt, in order to expand it to more tours of our urban center.

The objectives of the "Life Adaptation Project" are to reduce the temperature and therefore the thermal sensation of the pedestrians;

reduce the temperature of the facades and the pavement created by the "microclimates" in the cities;

combating urban heat waves for the benefit of climate change;

to reactivate the commerce of the zone in the months of high temperatures before the demand of the retailers;

decrease the expenditure on refrigeration of homes and businesses in the area and with them CO2 emissions and adaptation by municipalities to climate change and the rise in temperatures expected for years to come.

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, together with the Councilor for the Environment, Mª Saturnina Martínez, supervised this morning the start of the works of placing the canvases integrated in the awnings.
