The Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries develops a project on the cultivation of cherry trees in the Center of Agricultural Demonstration of Lorca, with the aim of introducing the most adaptable varieties to the Guadalentín area.

The project is carried out by the Integrated Center of Training and Agricultural Experiences (Cifea) of Lorca, in collaboration with the Murcian Institute for Agricultural Research and Development and Food (Imida), which has planted a dozen of the most innovative cherry varieties of the market on a plot of 1,200 square meters.

During the trial, new cultivation techniques, forms of tree conduction, fertigation by underground irrigation and other technical solutions that allow the viability of the plantation are put into practice.

The Minister of Agriculture acting, Miguel Angel del Amor, stressed that "the cultivated area of cherry in the Region of Murcia has increased significantly in the last ten years, although it is still a minority crop compared to the productions of stone fruit, especially apricot, peach and nectarine ".

He added that "it is intended to select cherry varieties that are best suited for growing in the Guadalentín area, in order to offer farmers a viable alternative to combine it with other species with different harvesting season."

The study 'Consolidation or consolidation of cherry cultivation as an alternative economic activity in certain regions of the Region of Murcia.

Choice of the plant material and the most suitable cultivation techniques for the chosen material ', developed by the Imida between 2007 and 2015, has served as the basis for choosing the varieties and patterns to be used in different regions and to promote the cultivation in zones not studied as the Guadalentín Valley, in order to establish the optimal varieties for a commercial crop.

This project is part of the Technology Transfer Program of the Ministry and the Rural Development Program 2014-2020, co-financed by the Feader fund, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Autonomous Community.
