Improvements in the works of the Central Round of Lorca accelerate the construction of the new bridge (19/07/2019)

The new section will improve traffic by absorbing 7,000 daily vehicles and decongest the main avenues of the city, increase drainage capacity and circulation in case of floods

The Central Round of Lorca continues its construction with the progress of the works of the second section, whose works runs the Autonomous Community with an investment of 3.6 million.

The regional government has improved the second section of the Central Round of Lorca to accelerate the process of construction of the new bridge over the Guadalentín River and that will link the San Diego neighborhood, where it will connect with the first section, with Santa Clara Avenue to give continuity to infrastructure.

The improvements consist mainly of the use of prefabricated elements in the construction of the bridge structure, which will be 116 meters long and 21.5 meters wide.

This provides several advantages, the main one is that it speeds up the duration of the work and also reduces both the occupation time and the volume of the occupied channel and increases the safety and quality of the structures.

In addition, the bridge will have only one central support and will be more flexible to reduce the effects in the event of a seismic movement.

The Minister of Development and Infrastructure in office, Patricio Valverde, today supervised the execution of the works in the second section due to the resumption of work after introducing these improvements in the planning of the infrastructure.

"This section, of just 422 meters, is the most important and complex in execution because it involves the construction of a new bridge over the river and increase the drainage capacity in times of heavy rains," said Patricio Valverde, who explained that this " demands a greater effort and provide the best solutions to meet the needs of Lorca. "

The counselor stressed that "it will significantly improve road safety and traffic in the city because it will absorb 7,000 vehicles per day to decongest the main avenues Juan Carlos I and Europe", where frequent traffic jams and road capacity are exceeded.

He also noted that the new section "will ensure circulation in times of heavy rains and increase the drainage capacity in case of floods, through the construction of three bays.

The works have a duration of 5 months, so the goal is to enter into service by the end of this year 2019.

Progress of the works

The works progress with the redefinition works, the conditioning of the accesses and the location of the affected services and will continue with the clearing of the bed of the river channel, the construction of the walls, the foundation of the central pile and of the abutments and the elevation of the abutments, piles and beams.

In parallel and simultaneously, diversions of affected services will be carried out (gas network, telephony, electricity, supply and sanitation).

Then proceed to the assembly of the beams, the execution of joint junctions and the installation of the board and, finally, two roads with 7 meters will be built, with two lanes of 3.5 meters per direction, two sidewalks of 1.5 meters, two bike lanes and a median and signaling will be installed.

In addition to the bridge, a new roundabout will be built at the intersection on the Camino de Cartagena and the junction of the Guadalentín river, and an intersection will be prepared on its connection with Santa Clara Avenue to facilitate all movements.

All services will also be replaced, some 40 LED-type luminaires and almost 200 trees will be installed.
