IU-Verdes demands to expedite the creation of the Promotion Commission for the PDO ´Redillo of the Highlands of Lorca´ (20/11/2019)

Gloria Martín transfers the restlessness of the producers after almost half of the period granted for the start-up of this entity has elapsed, without contacts having been initiated with these farmers from the City Council to start working together on this important objective

The councilor of the United Left-Greens in the City of Lorca, Gloria Martín, has moved today the malaise of the Association of producers of aromatic plants of the Highlands of Lorca who demand "more speed" in the creation of the Promoting Commission that will work in the achievement of the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for red thyme and in which the City Council should be involved.

Martín recalled that in the ordinary Plenary session corresponding to the month of October, the Corporation undertook to promote the creation of this commission, which should also include the participation of the Association of aromatic plant producers of the Highlands of Lorca.

This, in order to request the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment of the Region of Murcia, to initiate the file for the approval of the Protected Designation of Origin 'Red thyme of the Highlands of Lorca' .

However, almost half of the time allowed for the implementation of this entity has passed and from the City Council, "nobody has contacted these farmers to start working together on this important objective," said Martin.

The period was two months, of which practically one has already been consumed, when the creation of this Promoter Commission requires prior contacts and important advisory work by the local Administration.

Gloria Martín explained that the processing of protected designations of origin is a "complex" procedure regulated by regional, state and community regulations that requires dedicating "time" and "effort" if the City Council really wants to get a PDO for this unique product, which, for the mayor, "would mark a before and after in the economic development of these peoples."

Martin has expressed the "founded" fear of the producers that this is one of many plenary agreements that "stay in a drawer", so he has assured that his political training will be "absolutely vigilant" and will be demanding with its fulfillment.

"In IU-Verdes we are absolutely committed to the development of our Highlands, and this initiative cannot be thwarted by inaction after getting all the municipal groups to join it," said Martin.

"The support cannot be a nozzle, but the government team must get to work on this issue and do everything possible to comply with the agreements contemplated in that motion," Martin warned.
