IU-Verdes Lorca asks the mayor not to let the biomethane plant escape in the Highlands and meet with investors (04/02/2020)

The councilor of this formation, Gloria Martín, has lamented that since last week the representatives of the business group are trying, without success, that Mateos closes a formal meeting with them taking advantage that they will remain in Lorca until next Friday.

Enersi Energy SA and its local partner Greenway, have shown their interest in making an investment of 20 million euros in Lorca

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martín, has asked the mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos, to meet the requirement of the Hispanic-Italian business group that has shown its willingness to build a biomethane production plant in the Highlands through an investment of 20 million euros for which fifty jobs would be created.

The plant that projects this business group, which is part of the company Enersi Energy SA and its local partner Greenway, would use waste and by-products from agricultural and livestock activities, especially slurry.

And these facilities are designed with the capacity to treat about 110,000 tons of waste per year, of which about 50,000 would come from livestock.

The representatives of the company met on January 15 with residents of the area and with representatives of the City of Lorca, including several councilors of the Government team, to present their project.

"In principle, everything seems to be advantages," said Martin, who said that the treatment of organic waste would also generate optimal water for the crop that the Campo Alto Irrigation Community could have, which is deficient in water resources.

Martín explained that the company does not ask for anything - the investment is 100% private - except for the approval of the City Council and that information is provided on the availability of land and on the possibility of expediting bureaucratic procedures so that the plant begins to be built as soon as possible .

The councilwoman of IU-Verdes has shown her surprise because, after that meeting, the City Council did not make any effort to contact the company again to advance the project.

Moreover, Martin has lamented that since last week investors are trying, unsuccessfully, for the Mayor to close a formal meeting with them, taking advantage that they will remain in Lorca until next Friday.

"Not every day comes a commercial with 20 million euros to invest in Lorca," said the councilwoman of IU-Verdes, who warned that there are other municipalities in the neighboring province of Almeria with interest in this project, so he demanded " receive them this week. "

The mayor of IU-Verdes said that the City Council is not precisely "left over" from proposals for the economic diversification of the Highland villages or sustainable energy alternatives for the transformation of slurry so that this is an opportunity "that does not must be let out. "

In that sense, he recalled that Lorca only has two alternatives for the treatment of slurry, the Hinojar plant of the company EAMSA (Montisa Group), with a capacity for 110,000 tons per year and that of Barranco Hondo, acquired by the company JISAP.

With a local hut of one million pigs, excess excrement has become an environmental problem of serious consequences for Lorca.

"Neither the treatment plants are sufficient nor the livestock entrepreneurs are still sufficiently aware of their use," said Martin, who lamented that, meanwhile, "the alternative remains a bad management that pollutes air, soil and water."

Therefore, the mayor of IU-Verdes advocated promoting projects of these characteristics, "which not only solve the environmental problem of pollution associated with slurries, but also contribute to the efficiency of the electric power production system and especially to the reduction of CO2, replacing conventional fuels with natural gas ".
