The new passers-by shelter located in a municipal building on Marmolico Street in the San Pedro neighborhood opens its doors (05/02/2020)

The mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos, inaugurated, this morning, together with Juan Antonio Illán Frutos, general secretary of Cáritas Diocese of Cartagena, Lázaro Caballero, director of Cáritas Territorial de Lorca and the Councilor for Social Services, María Dolores Chumillas , the new facilities of the Lorca passer-by shelter, located on Marmolico street, in the San Pedro neighborhood and which is subsidized by the City Council and managed by Cáritas Interparroquial de Lorca.

The mayor of Lorca has stressed that "with the inauguration of the new location of the passer-by shelter concludes a long process for its implementation, due, above all, to the need to find a suitable place and that will have the approval of all the groups, also that of the neighbors, and in which to give assistance not only to passersby, but also to other people in an emergency, risk or exclusion situation ".

Diego José Mateos has detailed that "the City Council has allocated more than 20,000 euros to adapt this three-storey municipal premises where the hostel is located and where it has had to perform a redistribution, adapted the bathrooms, as well as the construction of a dining room and a kitchen on the ground floor. "

The hostel has two monitors and a cleaner, in addition to a social worker, the educator and psychologist of Cáritas de Lorca, and its new facilities of 210 square meters have assistance capacity for 12 people, for six men and for six women.

Mateos has explained that "this new infrastructure serves, as its name indicates, mainly to passers-by, people who are passing through our city, but this is not the only group that is served, since, currently, we find people who they need this assistance as well because they have suffered an unexpected crisis or some kind of disturbance, which they have to face a stressful situation or an event that affects them. "

From Cáritas, they have detailed that most of the cases that have occurred in the Shelter of Lorca Shelters, refer to people who suffered some type of crisis due to dismemberment, accession, demoralization, and also those caused by changes in status.

Among the users are also the seasonal workers, day laborers who do not find work in their town and need to go out to look for work in other areas, leaving their family, housing, friends, and who come to our city with nothing and look for a place. Where to sleep

As well as immigrants who come to Lorca encouraged by compatriots who offer them accommodation and work, but, to those who once in Lorca, do not find what they are transferred to these units.

As for the procedure in the hostel at the first moment someone arrives at the lodge, their registration is done, they are given personal clothing, they are offered breakfast service and a snack for lunch time, or hot dinner service.

In addition, Cáritas offers specialized administrative and legal advice to migrants, with a temporary residential shelter.

And, in a significant commitment to the fight against the intergenerational transmission of poverty, Cáritas launches specific actions for the support of children, with leisure activities and healthy leisure time, educational reinforcement and individual and family psychological support in the neighborhoods La Viña, San Cristóbal and San Pedro.
