IU-Verdes calls for more forcefulness to begin the plan to remove asbestos in public schools in Lorca (12/06/2020)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martín, has regretted that the regional government has already delegated the powers to the Murcia City Council to replace the fiber cement covers in twenty schools in the capital, while in Lorca several educational centers are still waiting for a solution The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes in Lorca, Gloria Martín, has criticized that the regional government has already delegated to the Murcia City Council, by means of a decree dated June 4, the replacement of school roofs that contain fiber cement, while the Lorca schools affected by this same cause are still waiting for a solution. Martín has also explained that the regional executive has released a 1.7 million euro item so that the Murcia City Council can proceed to withdraw and replace the covers of some twenty schools in this municipality between 2020 and 2023.

Actions that are part of the Energy Efficiency and Bioclimatic Reconversion Plan for the Region of Murcia, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The initial planning of actions planned by the Ministry of Education in Lorca includes the educational centers Petra González (La Paca), Almendricos and Zarcilla de Ramos for the period 2020-21.

For 2021-22, those of Villaespesa (Tercia), Casa del Niño, Pasico Campillo, Alfonso García López (Purias) and Zarzadilla de Totana.

In total, these clustered schools and rural centers complete an area of ??6,000 m2 of asbestos-containing materials on their roofs, water collection channels and external downspouts. However, Izquierda Unida is not aware that the delegation of regional powers has been carried out in the Lorca City Council, as has happened in Murcia, nor that the necessary funds have been released to start the proceedings in the Ciudad del Sol.

For this reason, Martín has asked the municipal government team for "more forcefulness" in their claims to the Ministry of Education so that Lorca is not relegated to the plans of the regional government. Martín recalled that the Scientific Committee on Toxicity, Ecotoxicity and the Environment of the European Communities spoke widely about the health effects of chrysolite asbestos, considered carcinogenic.

For this reason, in 2013, the European Parliament urged the EU to withdraw it, "as a priority objective" of all public buildings.
