[The City Council of Lorca requests the declaration of the Aqueduct of Zarzadilla de Totana as a Site of Cultural Interest in the category of Ethnographic Site (24/01/2021)

María Ángeles Mazuecos explained that it is "an enhancement with which we insist on the fight against depopulation as well as the promotion of outdoor sports and environmental education." The Councilor for Historical Heritage of the City of Lorca, María Ángeles Mazuecos, has reported the request for declaration as BIC of the Aqueduct of Zarzadilla de Totana.

Mazuecos explained that "from the City Council of Lorca, through the Department of Historical Heritage, we have begun the process of initiating the file of declaration of Asset of Cultural Interest as an ethnographic site of the Caño de Zarzadilla de Totana due to the historical value of the infrastructure, widely documented in hydric files ".

The mayor has detailed that "with the name of BIC what we want is to be able to implement all the pertinent actions for the recovery and rehabilitation of the Aqueduct of Zarzadilla de Totana, that is, to carry out actions for improvement, conservation and legal protection of this historical and cultural work that led the water through this hydraulic infrastructure and that, even today, is preserved in an acceptable state ".

"We consider that it is a crucial moment to establish measures for the conservation of the infrastructure since, currently, it is in relative good condition despite its great length and the large number of private farms that it crosses." Mazuecos Moreno has indicated that "for this we are going to propose the establishment of a collaboration agreement between the Lorca City Council itself, the neighborhood associations of Sierra de Pedro Ponce, Zúñiga and Torrealvilla and the Natusport Foundation in order to develop the entire process necessary for its rehabilitation and enhancement of this important historical, cultural and natural heritage for its conservation and protection ".

The Councilor for Historical Heritage has specified that "the construction of the Aqueduct of the Zarzadilla de Totana ended in 1781, having begun in 1769 with the commissioning of the preliminary studies.

The infrastructure composed of 23 arches, which has a length close to 24 kilometers and runs from the district to the urban area at the foot of the mountain massif of the Sierra de Pedro Ponce, it captures the waters to lead them to the sources for supplying the Lorca neighborhoods of Santa Quiteria and San Cristóbal, in the sources of La Estrella and El Caño, respectively ".

María Ángeles Mazuecos has shown that "the objective of this Government team is to continue working on the recovery of the multitude of spaces and infrastructures that we have in the municipality of Lorca and that are a tourist attraction for both residents.

of the bordering areas as of all Lorca and people who visit us, an enhancement with which we insist on the fight against depopulation as well as the promotion of outdoor sports and environmental education ".
