The Department of Tourism promotes the incorporation of Lorca Network Juderías (22/07/2016)

The objective pursued is the inclusion of our city in the Network of Jewish-Sefarad Spain, in order to continue spreading the Jewish culture so prevalent in our city.

The Councillor of Tourism of the City of Lorca, Francisco Montiel, has reported that the city council will claim the inclusion of our city in the Network of Jewish Spain.

Sanchez Montiel stressed that this request, which will be transferred to the current presidency of the organization, has the support of the council as a whole, which demonstrates the interest aroused in Lorca our past and culture.

This demand also takes place after the tourism and cultural exchange around the Jewish past of Lorca and Lucena, which marked the first visit lorquina to the municipality to present their project in the Jewish area.

Francisco Montiel recalled that last November 30, the City Council at its regular meeting in plenary, and requested joining the Network of Jewish Quarters in Spain-Sefarad to the former Chair of the Network, noting that the excavation of the area East Lorca Castle, linked to the construction of the Parador, had the most remarkable campaigns of 2003, year of the discovery of the Jewish quarter and the years 2005-2008 that allowed a more thorough study of the synagogue building and its relationship with the rest of the Jewish quarter.

Montiel explained that it was in 2003 when the Synagogue and the emergence of significant elements such as the janukkía, facts that made possible the identification of the Jewish Quarter of the Medieval Lorca, located in the eastern part of the castle was discovered, with a complex synagogal given the relationship between the building of the synagogue and a house, known as "the house VII".

Specifically, the dating of the building of the synagogue corresponds to the first half of the fifteenth century, when the population grew considerably and the construction of a building that could meet community needs became necessary.

The Councillor of Tourism has indicated that the importance of these findings of the Jewish presence in Lorca, resulted and complement the exhibition "Luces de Sefarad", which opened in 2009 in Murcia, having visited the Spanish capital in 2015. in addition, three of the ritual lamps discovered in the excavations of the synagogue were part of the exhibition entitled "Sefarad Bibles" held at the National Library of Spain in Madrid.

The existence of these important archaeological remains have a positive impact on our city, including, among other actions, the organization of visits coming from Jerusalem and Jewish institutions around the world, including the Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel.

The mayor of Tourism has stressed that with the same disseminate the findings, the City of Lorca organized the exhibition "Traces of Jewish Culture" which has toured major cities related to the Jewish area as Toledo, Avila and Cordoba, members and Network of Jewish Quarters in Spain.

Specifically in our city it is organized since 2013 a Festival of Jewish Culture, "Jewish Festival", in collaboration with Casa Sefarad, offers the union of culture and leisure in a unique setting such as the Castle of Lorca.

It is also noteworthy participation for some years in the European Day of Jewish Culture, and as more recent activity activities in Córdoba to mark the 700th anniversary of its synagogue.

Sanchez Montiel anticipated that next Monday will be presented in plenary a motion to make clear the interest shown by the city of Lorca to be part of the Network of Jewish Quarters in Spain-Sefarad.
