The supervision of the Department of Health maintains at very low levels the presence of the tiger mosquito in Lorca (20/07/2017)

All the traps established by the City Council, in collaboration with the Department of Zoology and Physical Anthropology of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Murcia, have offered a negative result.

The Councilor for Health in the City of Lorca, María del Carmen Ruiz, has reported that as in previous years, with the arrival of high temperatures this municipal area is carrying out the campaign of monitoring and control of the tiger mosquito.

In this sense last May 31 was the location of 30 traps for the detection of eggs (ovitramps) in different parts of the city.

Ruiz Jódar has explained that the traps consist of a container of black color with water in its interior in which a semi-submerged tablet is introduced.

The recommendation is to place the ovitrampas in the shade, preferably under vegetation, avoiding aromatic plants, at ground level or no taller than 2 meters.

Traps of the traps are collected every 15 days for their study, being replaced by new ones.

In the first collection, carried out on June 15, no positive sample appeared.

However, in the second, which took place on June 28, 2 of the traps placed in the area of the Alamedas gave a positive result.

Before this circumstance municipal technicians visited to the neighbors of the zone to communicate the situation to them and to give them the necessary recommendations for the elimination of the foci of breeding.

The Councilor for Health explained that from the inspection was spotted the presence of a pool that had remained empty and somewhat neglected, and may be the focus of the larvae.

To eradicate any incidence the pool has been cleaned, filled with water and chlorinated by its owners, so the problem has disappeared.

In fact, in the collection carried out later, specifically on July 14, all traps of ovoposition, have given a negative result, so in principle and in accordance with the criteria established by the specialists, Measures applied have been effective and the situation controlled.

María del Carmen Ruiz has anticipated that the Municipal Executive is currently continuing to develop this campaign with the aim of preventing the arrival of this species of insect and, if appropriate, respond effectively to the detection of hypothetical colonies.

It should be noted that larvae were collected from the pool under examination in some containers for identification purposes, none of which corresponded to a tiger mosquito.

In addition, an adult trap has been set up in one of the houses in the area for continuous and rigorous supervision.

The Councilor for Health has said that the City Council initiated a campaign of public awareness for the elimination of possible breeding sites, since the attitude of citizens is crucial to combat this species.

To this end, 5,000 brochures were distributed in coordination with the Ministry of Health and distributed to the municipality.

A talk was also given at the Alto Guadalentín Adult Education Center and several talks at the Narciso Yepes and Ciudad del Sol schools for first, second and third elementary school children in June.

The Minister of Health has highlighted that this area of the Consistory established a collaboration agreement two years ago with the Department of Zoology and Physical Anthropology of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Murcia, which remains in force, and thanks to which has come Working on the implementation and development of actions aimed at the detection and control of this mosquito.

In this sense, all efforts have been focused on the monitoring of the same, establishing hundreds of controls throughout the municipality of Lorca (through oviposition traps) that detected minimal presence of this species for the first time in December 2015. The councils So that we can keep their presence very low among them are the following: • Uses repellents, especially in the legs.

The tiger mosquito usually stings in areas of the body closest to the ground, but it stings children throughout the body.

• Maintain good body hygiene.

Sweat and strong odors attract them.

It also avoids sweet perfumes.

• Put mosquito nets on windows and electrical devices against insects.

• Avoid containers that can collect water, such as buckets or drums, tires.

• Eliminates water accumulated in objects or empty it weekly: vases, ashtrays, potting dishes, plastic swimming pools, animal drinking fountains ...

• Closes with lid or mosquito net, water tanks.

• Keep chlorine levels in your pool.

• Put ornamental fish in your pond or garden fountain, as they eat the larvae.

• Regularly clean roof and terrace channels.

• Regulates drip irrigation so there is no waterlogging.

The tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is an invasive species of Asian origin, smaller than usual, being black with white spots.

It is easily distinguishable by its characteristic white stripe on the thorax and head.

Breeding in small amounts of water, never in rivers, marshes, etc. with lots of water or moving during the day, and prefer to sting people aggressively.

Its biological cycle oscillates between 8 and 15 days.

It was in 2004 when for the first time the tiger mosquito was detected in Spain, reaching the Region of Murcia in 2011.

The University of Murcia conducted in 2013 a study of the entire coast of Murcia.

In the municipality of Lorca 4 traps were arranged in the Ramonete-Puntas axis of Calnegre, all of which were negative.

In 2014, the Department of Health and the University of Murcia carried out a new control campaign, between September 31 and November 28, during which 308 samples were analyzed, again all negative.

That same year the City Council, in anticipation of any incidence, proceeded to the edition and distribution of 5,000 diptych informative about this species.

In 2015 this task was continued, which was carried out during the period between August 31 and November 27, analyzing 106 samples of which 2 confirmed the presence of this mosquito in Lorca, the City Council proceeding to the fumigation And elimination of breeding grounds.
