IU-Greens alert of the serious environmental impact generated by the macro-farmers in Lorca (09/10/2017)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martín, has demanded that Aguas de Lorca make public the justifications of consumption and payments of livestock farms whose environmental authorizations include the municipal water network as a source of supply, given the suspicion that some use non-potable water from the Irrigation Community.

It has also called for "social responsibility" to companies that purchase pigs for the production of their meat products and come from highly polluting farms

The Councilor for the United Left-Greens, Gloria Martín, has warned of the great environmental impact that is causing the "uncontrolled proliferation" of intensive pig farms in the municipality of Lorca.

In that sense, he explained that last week alone, the General Directorate of Environment granted environmental licensing licenses for projects to farm four farms totaling 23,000 head of cattle, 17,000 in Almendricos and 6,000 in Hinojar.

"These facilities are very close to urban centers of population, which sometimes break the minimum distances of sanitary separation and are turning the environment into" landfill ", due to the serious contamination of the subsoil.

The mayor of IU-Verdes showed images of a farm located in the hamlet of Cazalla with corpses that are "simple holes in the earth", unsealed rafts that ooze detritus and fields flooded with slurries that seep into the subsoil "without any type of control" and where it is evident that there is no management plan and production of manures that the current legislation requires.

In this regard, it was asked whether the large firms that acquire these animals for the production of their meat products or the horticultural companies that cultivate these lands, are aware of the operation of these macrogranjas and of how it affects the raw material that they commercialize.

Therefore, it appealed to its "social responsibility" not to collaborate with companies that endanger the health of end consumers and degrade the environment in a heinous way.

"We can not understand that they announce on television ham cooked without phosphates and that afterwards they do not demand any measure of control nor quality to the farms of where comes its raw material," he said.

The Councilor of the United Left-Greens, also demanded that Aguas de Lorca make public the justifications of consumption and payments of livestock farms whose environmental authorizations include the municipal water network as a source of supply.

Martín explained that the average consumption of water for cleaning and drinking of pigs from 20 to 100 kg, is regulated, by regulation, at a minimum of 8 liters / animal / day.

Therefore, a farm of 6,000 heads consumes at least 17,520 m3 / year.

The majority can not only supply water from wells and from the rainwater network, so that, in order to obtain a favorable report on the Environment, they acquire a minimum consumption commitment from the municipal network.

However, Izquierda Unida-Verdes has had access to the consumption of some of these farms that flagrantly breaches the volumes of water that should come from the public network.

In this regard, Martín reported that they have detected macrocebadores "where everything indicates that they would be supplying non-potable water from the network of the Irrigation Community".

The mayor of IU-Verdes wondered how it is possible that said entity supply irrigation water to these farmers if it is the first to denounce a water deficit that often threatens its own activity;

if the farmers of Lorca know and consent to this practice;

and how much money these farmers are saving unlike other entrepreneurs by using water without sanitary guarantees.

Martín, will make these facts known to the Public Prosecutor's Office in case they constitute crimes.

In addition, he denounced that the lack of urban planning guarantees the rights of people, respectful of the environment and properly order economic activity, is making Lorca the "purines capital."

Martín also questioned the integration model, based on automated farms that barely generate employment and have turned the traditional stockholder into a pseudo-wage-earner of large business groups that are disconnected from the environmental balance and the rural world itself and monopolize the sector.

For the mayor of IU-Verdes the production of pigs has escaped the agricultural world and has become a large-scale industrial phenomenon that, in the case of Lorca, "threatens to be out of control" due to lack of planning and municipal regulation.
