"Vandalism towards public goods in Lorca must be quantified to the last cent" (17/01/2018)

The spokesman of the Municipal Group of IU-V, Pedro Sosa, has appeared this morning before the media to announce several initiatives of his political group in relation to the growing vandalism that is subject to the urban furniture of Lorca and other public goods.

He has done it accompanied by the President of the Association of Neighbors of Santa Maria, Pedro García, and other members of the board of directors of that neighborhood collective.

Starting from the specific issues that affect the neighborhoods of Lorca: lots full of garbage, urban furniture destroyed or nonexistent, deficiencies in the works of conditioning of the neighborhoods, or the particular state that presents the handrail that limits its upper part to Belluga Square, loose and with evident danger of collapsing dragging large stone columns, Sosa has denounced that the local government of the PP is not giving any response to the problems of vandalism that globally affect Lorca in the center of the city and in the neighborhoods.

The spokesman of IU-V states that just a month ago the mayor denounced social networks the damage caused in several stone and wood banks of the Lorca malls, but that complaint does not pass social networks, nor, as we know, has had a later tour.

The same thing happens with the continuous attacks of the Pasarela del Guadalentín in its glazed part, the lighting or the tiles of the adjoining boulevard, or the damage to which certain bronze sculptures of the historic area are subjected as the effort to leave without a sword to the stature of Alfonso X of the Plaza de España or without glasses to the bust of the poet Eliodoro Puche in Barandillas street.

Therefore, says Sosa, we should not settle for public denunciation without further ado, and other measures must be adopted.

In this sense proposes a first measure of a pedagogical nature and consistent in quantifying punctually any act of vandalism in Lorca and make a global quantification for each year of what it costs to Lorca these incivil attitudes that occur in the city.

This is already done in many Spanish town halls.

We must inform the Lorca of the thousands of euros that we have to detract from other public services and what is sacrificially provided through taxes, to deal with these acts.

That information, Sosa points out, could perhaps deter some potential vandals, or, at least, if it would help encourage in the rest of Lorca the need to denounce when they witness this type of act.

On the other hand, we must control, prosecute, denounce and collect the damages that some do in the patrimony of all.

In this sense Sosa proposes the timely placement of cameras in some areas or concrete elements of Lorca's urban heritage such as Las Alamedas or Pasarela del Guadalentín.

It also demands that the assets of those who are caught damaging the assets of all be judicially removed, and in the case of lack of resources to face the damage that the imposition of sanctions consisting of work for the benefit of the community.
