The recovery of the monumental heritage damaged by the 2011 earthquakes centers the papers of the World Congress organized by Hispania Nostra for October (09/05/2018)

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has informed that a total of 45 communications have already been selected by the Scientific Committee that is developing the works prior to the celebration of the International Congress "Cultural Heritage and Catastrophes: Lorca as reference", of the that a third focus on the work that has been done to recover the heritage of our city after the earthquakes of 2011. It should be noted that another third refers to international issues, with a clear majority of Latin America, and the third remaining to other topics of Spain and more general.El event will be held at the Teatro Guerra of our city between 3, 4 and 5 of next October.

The Mayor explained that the papers that are attracting the attention of the aforementioned group of experts are those submitted by the Project Manager of the International Center for Studies for the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICROM), Aparna Tandon, which will deal with the lessons derived from experiences of heritage recovery after catastrophes in various enclaves of the world.

Along with this has been highlighted the paper entitled "How to manage the historical heritage of Chile in one of the regions with the highest seismicity index in the world", which will be offered by the head curator of the Paper and Books Laboratory of the CNCR and coordinator of the Management Committee of Risks and Emergencies of Chile, Cecilia Rodríguez.

In addition to the international scope, Ángel Luís de Sousa, coordinator of the National Plan for Emergencies and Risk Management in the Cultural Heritage of the Cultural Heritage Institute of Spain, will address the mission of the European Union in Mexico 2017.

The architect Francisco Jurado has presented one of the most interesting interventions, since he will focus on explaining the recovery of part of the monumental heritage of Lorca damaged by earthquakes through a guided tour of several restored buildings.

Lorca can be proud of the hard work we have been able to carry out to recover our architectural heritage, which suffered so much damage due to the earthquakes of the year 2011. Looking back, we can remember how our most outstanding monuments were. earthquake and how they are today.

Each Lorca, with his daily effort and his personal commitment to take this city forward, has helped to raise the Collegiate Church of San Patricio, the temples of Santiago, Santo Domingo, Virgen de las Huertas, San Francisco, San Mateo, San Pedro , Santa María, San José, Cristo Rey, or civil buildings such as the Palacio de Guevara, the Casa de los Salazar-Rosso (Archaeological Museum), Teatro Guerra, among other examples.

The Mayor has stressed that Lorca are leading a true renaissance of architectural and monumental heritage, putting in value elements of our heritage that had been in their state of degradation progressing, as is the case in particular of the churches of the upper neighborhoods.

We can anticipate that we will have the opportunity to contemplate the church of Santa María as never expected, providing a social, cultural and tourist resource that adds to our historical legacy.

This intervention is added to the one that also materializes in San Pedro, which will stop being a disused temple to become a new visitable piece and put into service for the use and enjoyment of all Lorca.

Fulgencio Gil has anticipated that now that we have gained momentum, Lorca will not stop until our patrimonial renaissance is extended to all its elements, seeking the necessary funding to recover the church of San Juan, putting the colophon to the temples of the neighborhoods high, pieces about which much has been spoken for decades and whose integral recovery is a reality that we will all enjoy.

This Congress constitutes the most important event within the commemoration by the EU of the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

It has the organization of Hispania Nostra, AON Foundation, City Council, Ministry of Culture and CARM.

Fulgencio Gil has said that the model of city that is being raised among all Lorca speaks of a new Lorca, stronger, cohesive and effectively recovered, within which frames a monumental historical treasure in better shape than ever, reconstructing what the Earthquake threw and improving everything damaged.

The Congress that will be held in our city will allow us to project to the whole world how Lorca is now.

The improvement in this aspect is very evident, and that is something that we owe to the strength of the Lorca pride.

All citizens are protagonists of this historic chapter of Lorca.

The First Edil has stressed that the recovery of historical heritage has contributed greatly to the restitution of the feeling of a society as a whole.

In the congress you can learn about catastrophe experiences in the cultural heritage lived in different countries, you can compare the different systems of protection and action in emergencies, the recovery process carried out in Lorca will be analyzed and it will be an opportunity to visit the concrete actions carried out.

The Congress includes sessions for the exchange of international experiences before heritage disasters, concrete examples of reaction to catastrophes, as well as the presentation of the catastrophe observatory of the AON Foundation, as well as a day entirely devoted to learning about the case of Lorca, with visits on site.

The work carried out in the field of underwater heritage, floods, the recovery of the Sarajevo library, the EU mission in Mexico 2017, and interventions in fires will be made known, among other issues.

The contents of the communications sent to date are about risk management and heritage before catastrophes such as those recorded in Ecuador, Mexico, Mesopotamian heritage (area of ​​the Tigris and Euphrates rivers), as well as preventive management of cave paintings in the event of fires.

This will include the participation of UNESCO officials, the International Center of Studies for the Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), Civil Guard, Ministry of Culture, representatives of the National Library, University of Granada, General of Civil Protection and Emergencies, Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), university specialists of the Polytechnic of Madrid, as well as members of the Historical Heritage Service of the Region of Murcia and prestigious architects.
