Lorca joins the awareness campaign "Partir de Cero", promoted by the Gypsy Secretariat with the aim of combating discrimination against this group (20/06/2018)

It is a proposal that will be raised to the next municipal plenary session, with the backing of all the political groups represented in the City Council.

The Councilor for Equality in the City of Lorca, Juan Francisco Martínez, has reported that the City of Lorca is going to adhere to the Campaign for Sensitization "Starting from Zero", also subscribing to the Decalogue for a city Zero, under the motto "Lorca, Ciudad Cero".

This is an initiative of the Gypsy Secretariat that aims to combat discrimination and will be raised to the next plenary session of the Consistory, with the unanimity of all municipal political groups.

Martínez Carrasco stressed that from the Municipal Council we firmly believe in equal opportunities between men and women, without prevailing any discrimination for cultural reasons, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation or nationality, a principle that should be promoted from the institutions in order to contribute to the elimination of stereotypes and prejudices that often contribute to or are responsible for maintaining social inequalities and, in many cases, discrimination.

Based on this conviction, we express our intention to publicly support the need for the City of Lorca to subscribe to the "Starting from Zero" Awareness Campaign proposed by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano to combat the current discrimination against Roma people.

This awareness campaign aims to raise awareness about the inequality and discrimination that the Roma community still suffers in Spain.

For all the above, we promote the adhesion of our City Council to the Campaign of Sensitization "Starting from Zero" and that subscribes the Decalogue for a Zero City, a manifesto that includes the following points:

A Zero City is one where nobody is disadvantaged because everyone has the same opportunities, regardless of their ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, nationality or religion.

The Laws of a Zero City protect citizens and guarantee the equality of all people.

Its institutions are inclusive and work so that all people have the same rights and obligations.

Their rulers are sensitive to injustice and their policies promote equality.

In a Zero City the media offer a fair image of all citizens, and social networks reject hate speech.

The companies of a Cero City value their workers for their skills and training, and not for their ethnicity, gender or personal characteristics.

Their schools and educational centers are enriched with diversity and foster respect among all students.

In a Zero City housing is a right, and prejudices do not prevent any citizen from accessing it.

In the shops and places of leisure of a Cero City everyone is welcome, and no one is treated with humiliation, suspicion or rejection.

The citizens of a Cero City are proud of their diversity and are respectful of others, because these values contribute to their well-being and happiness.
