Lorca joins the "Starting from Zero" Awareness Campaign set up by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano with the aim of combating discrimination against this group (28/06/2018)

With this campaign of awareness, whose adhesion of the city has been unanimously approved by all the municipal groups of the Plenary Session of the City Council of Lorca, the aim is to raise awareness about the inequality and discrimination that the Roma community still suffers in Spain.

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, reported that the Plenary of the City of Lorca has approved this morning unanimously of all municipal political groups to join the Campaign of Awareness "Starting from Zero", also subscribing to the Decalogue for a city Zero, under the slogan "Lorca, Ciudad Cero".

It is an initiative of the Gypsy Secretariat that aims to combat discrimination.

Fulgencio Gil has stressed that "from the Town Hall we firmly believe in equal opportunities between men and women, without prevailing any discrimination for cultural reasons, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation or nationality, a principle that should be promoted from the public institutions in order to contribute to the elimination of stereotypes and prejudices that often contribute to or are responsible for maintaining social inequalities and in many cases discrimination. "

The Mayor of Lorca added that "based on this conviction, we express our intention to publicly support the need for the Lorca City Council to subscribe to the" Starting from Zero "Awareness Campaign proposed by the Fundación Secretariado Gitano to combat discrimination currently existing towards Roma people. "This awareness campaign aims to raise awareness about the inequality and discrimination that the Roma community still suffers in Spain".

Gil stressed that "for all the above, we promote the adhesion of our City Council to the Campaign of Awareness" Starting from Zero "and that subscribes the Decalogue for a Cero City, a manifesto that includes the following points:

1) A Zero City is one where nobody is disadvantaged because everyone has the same opportunities, regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, nationality or religion.

2) The Laws of a Zero City protect citizens and guarantee the equality of all people.

3) Their institutions are inclusive and work so that all people have the same rights and obligations.

4) Their leaders are sensitive to injustice and their policies promote equality.

5) In a Zero City the media offer a fair image of all citizens, and social networks reject hate speech.

6) The companies of a Ciudad Cero value their workers for their skills and training, and not for their ethnicity, gender or personal characteristics.

7) Their schools and educational centers are enriched with diversity and foster respect among all students.

8) In a Zero City housing is a right, and prejudices do not prevent any citizen from accessing it.

9) In the shops and places of leisure of a Cero City everyone is welcome, and no one is treated with humiliation, suspicion or rejection.

10) The citizens of a Cero City are proud of their diversity and are respectful of others, because these values contribute to their well-being and happiness. "
