IU will ask in the Plenary the elaboration of a map of odors so that it diminishes its impact (17/07/2018)

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martín, will request through a motion of the Plenary that the City of Lorca investigate the bad smells detected in the municipality.

"It is unacceptable that neighbors have to suffer stench systematically and also that this is the card of the city to tourists," said the mayor.

Until now, according to Martin, there is no line of work specifically aimed at this type of pollution despite the presence of highly polluting industries in this regard in Lorca.

"In some areas of the town it is difficult to breathe, especially at nightfall, when the odors of animal fats and slurry are mixed," he said.

Therefore, the aim of IU is that municipal technicians, counting on citizen collaboration, establish a map of odors to determine the sources of emission and start the corresponding intervention to try to reduce its environmental impact.

IU will also demand the elaboration of an ordinance in order to regulate this type of pollution in the atmosphere and ensure the welfare of citizens.

"The City must seek the normative and material means that manage to regulate and control the odoriferous impact by industrial activities," said Martin.

The mayor assured that this type of initiatives are already being addressed in other municipalities in the Region such as Murcia, Alcantarilla, Cieza or Jumilla.

Pollution by tropospheric ozone

Gloria Martín has also requested explanations from the General Directorate of the Environment, after Ecologists in Action has denounced the continuous breakdowns that are occurring in the tropospheric ozone analyzers of the fixed station of Lorca, belonging to the Regional Network of Atmospheric Surveillance .

These failures occur precisely in the period with the highest ozone levels, when the target value of protection of human health is usually exceeded (120 micrograms / cubic meter).

Ozone analyzers in Lorca have been running for 20 days in May (12 to 31 May), and 18 days in June (from 1 to 12 and from 17 to 22).

Martín described as "very serious" a situation that "is not new", since if there were levels that exceeded the legal values of health protection, it would not have been possible to alert the population or apply the measures established by the regulations for protect public health.
