IU denounces that, according to BreezoMeter, the air in Lorca is "unhealthy" due to particles P10 (25/07/2018)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martin, has also demanded the installation of a second tropospheric ozone meter in the municipality and has denounced that the only one available at the moment has obsolete analyzers and their useful life exhausted, which generates continuous incidences and failures

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martin, has denounced that Lorca has suffered today a new episode of air pollution by particles P10.

Martín explained that simply by typing "air quality" in the Internet search engine Google, users have access to the environmental air quality index in real time, in their specific location.

The information is provided by BreezoMeter, a computer application that uses a data analysis algorithm that takes into account the dispersion and flow of contamination, crossing the values obtained by the sensors with meteorological information and other sources such as satellite data or conditions of the traffic.

This morning, at 9:00 am, the app rated the air in Lorca as "unhealthy", the main pollutant being the P10 particles.

This in addition to the serious problem of tropospheric ozone pollution that in Lorca has become practically "chronic".

The mayor of IU-Green has remembered that the BreezoMeter information is easily accessible to any potential visitor from Lorca and regretted that the high air pollution suffered in Lorca is a handicap also for the development of tourism.

"Air quality is an important public concern given that it is intimately related to the health of people," he recalled.

Therefore, Martín has demanded the installation of a second tropospheric ozone meter in the municipality.

With 1,675 km², equivalent to the territory of a small province, Lorca is the second largest municipal area in Spain.

However, it only has one air pollution control station that also has outdated analyzers and its useful life, which generates continuous incidents and failures, as reported by IU last week.

Gloria Martin has also asked that the Center for Atmospheric Studies of the Mediterranean carry out an exhaustive study to check the dynamics of the pollutants and find out where they come from in our municipality.

For this, it is essential to have, at least, another fixed measuring station in Lorca and complement these data with those obtained by mobile stations.

10% of schoolchildren already suffer from asthma

Martín recalled that according to the World Health Organization, ozone pollution causes in Spain 2,000 deaths per year due to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

In children, it prevents them from reaching the maximum lung volume.

And it is that, the environmental pollution and its harmful consequences spread like wildfire among one of the most vulnerable sectors of the population: children.

Asthma, allergies and respiratory diseases have doubled in the last 15 years.

According to the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), 30% of childhood diseases are associated with the environment.

In fact, according to studies carried out by researchers at the university hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca (Murcia), 10% of school children already suffer from asthma.
