Lorca says goodbye to the Franciscans (01/10/2018)

After more than 500 years as custodians of the image of Our Lady of the Gardens and its sanctuary, the Franciscans said goodbye yesterday to the town of Lorca.

The Bishop of Cartagena dismissed the friars in a temple full of Lorca excited by the departure of the religious.

The Provincial of the Order of Friars Minor (OFM), as well as other priests of the order and dioceses also concelebrated the Eucharist.

Shortly before 11:00 am the image of the patron returned to her sanctuary, on the last day of the festivities, after spending the whole week in the church of San Diego.

Among the hundreds of faithful present were the president of the Autonomous Community and the mayor of Lorca.

"We face a reality of pain and joy, for the farewell of our dear Franciscan Fathers," said Bishop Lorca in his homily, "that has left an indelible mark on this city of Lorca and for many of them it has been an occasion for to live sanctity and to preach with the example of a life in fullness and poverty, but rich in the love of God. "

In addition, he encouraged the Lorca to continue the charitable work that the friars have carried in the convent of the Virgen de las Huertas.

For his part, the Provincial of the Franciscans, Juan Carlos Moya, recalled that they are in "a process of restructuring due to the scarcity of vocations, as more religious are dying than those who enter, and this forces us to take this type of decisions. "

He assured that they leave with a lot of pain: "this breaks our heart, our soul, but we do not find another alternative.

We leave with gratitude for the love received, with the peace of having done what we thought we should do and with a word of forgiveness for those situations in which they have been able to detect that we have not been witnesses of the Gospel.

It hurts us to leave Lorca, "added the Franciscan.

"Our intention," said the provincial, "is for the convent to remain a meeting place to celebrate, deepen and share the faith.

We want this sanctuary, like the whole convent, to be an open place, placed at the service of the city of Lorca, from which the maximum number of people will benefit ".

To this end, the Franciscan Province of the Immaculate and the Diocese of Cartagena are processing an agreement to transfer the convent for its custody.

"The friars left, but with you there remains the spirit of Saint Francis with the Clarisse sisters and the Secular Franciscan Order," he said.

At the end of the Eucharist, the Brotherhood of the Virgen de las Huertas gave several recognitions, among them the Franciscans.
