IU-Lorca criticizes the opening of large shopping centers in San Clemente (11/10/2018)

The councilor of this formation, Gloria Martin, regrets that the PP watch only for the interests of the local and regional employers while contributing to harm the rights of the working class and promotes compulsive purchases and unsustainable consumerism

The councilor of Izquierda Unida Verdes in Lorca, Gloria Martín, harshly criticized the decision of the municipal government team to declare as open for large commercial areas the day of November 23, local festivity.

Martín has denounced that the decree satisfies a request from the Local Union of Merchants, the Chamber of Commerce, Ceclor and the Association of supermarkets of the Region of Murcia, while not taking into account the unions, which represent the feeling of the working class.

The declaration as an opentable holiday is changed from this Friday, October 12 to November 23, and has been announced only three days in advance "without taking into account the family and social needs of the workers".

"What the PP does is watch exclusively because the local and regional employers expand their profit margins to the detriment of workers' rights, which are increasingly difficult to reconcile their family life with work," said Martin.

The mayor of IU-Greens said that this measure also damages small local commerce, vertebrador of territory and generator of employment, since "can not compete with the big chains."

The councilor of IU-Greens has also regretted that from the municipal government team promotes consumerism as the main activity to avoid the "flight" of Lorca to the regional capital on San Clemente Day.

"Perhaps if the city offered attractive cultural alternatives, the neighbors would not have to resort to the English Corté or succumb to the" Black Friday. "A fashion imported from the United States that encourages compulsive purchases and unsustainable consumption.

Martín said she felt "embarrassed" because the public administration participates in "a trap" in which the consumer leaves aside vital values and needs and focuses on buying as a means to achieve happiness, which becomes unattainable, since companies They submerge the individual in a state of permanent dissatisfaction as they develop new products.

As a result, people become slaves of what society, by determining influence of the media culture -ordered by the power of industry- establishes as a priority for consumption.

"That the City lends itself to this game and encourages it seems terrible," he said.

Therefore, IU bet "for a new culture of consumption that serves to promote greater social cohesion and take into account the principles of Fair Trade and Corporate Social Responsibility," he concluded.
