The badminton returns to Lorca thanks to the celebration of the Games Trophy (14/10/2018)

The Guadalentín Sports Games program brings popular activities every year, other traditional ones and also new sports as they begin to be practiced in the municipality.

But sometimes it offers returns of sports that one day were in vogue in Lorca and that for one reason or another stopped practicing or remained as residual sports.

This year, squash and judo returned to the Games.

And now badminton has done thanks to the efforts of some secondary teachers of the Lorca institutes, including José García Murcia.

Back in the late 80's and 90's badminton was fashionable in Lorca, a city that had famous players like the brothers Juan and Pedro Ortuño or Sergio Mérida.

But it was falling into oblivion and being in the shadow of other sports with more players like tennis or, in recent times, the paddle.

However, badminton was once again the protagonist of the sports agenda with the Trophy that, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Lorca Olympics, was launched and whose objective was to recover this sport that is returning to the national scene thanks to the presence of the Huelva champion Carolina Marín.

From the institutes of Lorca the students were motivated to participate and learn about this sport that during the whole week celebrated its previous phase in the afternoon at the Pavilion Juan Zurano, of recent appointment.

To practice the sport the lines were painted with the regulatory measures and networks and flyers were recovered allowing the badminton to return to the city.

Specifically, a score of young people took part in this phase, as well as some of the famous local players of decades ago who wanted to pick up the racquet and play badminton again to teach the youngsters how to do it.

On the morning of Saturday the finals were held, offering a complete morning that was the best closing for the return of the badminton to Lorca, a return that has to be to stay.

As for the winners, in the male sub 16 category the winner was Pedro Martínez García, runner-up was Antonio Pérez Garre, while third place went to Omar Bentalet and Brien.

In the women's category Kelly won, being runner-up María Jiménez.
