IU-Green calls for greater investment in social policy (17/10/2018)

The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, recognized by the United Nations in 1992, is celebrated every year on October 17, remembering that poverty is a human rights problem, since more than 800 million people still live with less than $ 1.25 a day and many lack access to adequate food, water and sanitation, according to data from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

Adoración Peñas, councilor of the municipal group of IU-Green in the municipality of Lorca said that "in a world characterized by an unprecedented level of economic development, technological means and financial resources, is a moral scandal that millions of people live in the extreme poverty ", and on the 70th anniversary of the proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is important to remember the fundamental link between extreme poverty and human rights, and the fact that people living in situations of poverty are disproportionately affected by numerous human rights violations.

Since IU-Greens have repeatedly echoed numerous studies that place our region as one of the poorest in Spain, as a result of almost three decades of conservative governments that have dismantled the public system of social protection, generating a tremendous defenselessness in the citizenship, especially in the sectors of the most vulnerable population and in need of social attention, as well as, in the case of our municipality, the poorest third of Spain among those with more than 50,000 inhabitants.

Peñas recalled that there are many needs that exist in our town, from the aspect of housing and the need to respond to large groups of people through a public park of social rental housing, to investment in effective employment policies , that allow to efficiently revert the situations of entrenched poverty heading towards a full insertion, among other issues.

In particular, the mayor has stressed the need to strengthen the council of social services with a decent budget that allows to cover the most basic needs of the population in a real way, while demanding greater investments and reinforcements in services and programs such as Attention to families and minors at risk, the help service to the municipal domicile (apart from that linked to the dependency system), etc.

In this sense, Peñas recalls that each year his political training is under obligation to denounce that the budget allocated in the CARM to the city of Lorca for this council continue on the parameters to which he descended after the brutal regional cuts in policy social in the hardest years of the economic crisis, while some private entities get almost four times the budget of the CARM from the administration.

Therefore, from IU-Green claim that the municipal budgets of 2019 are taken into account these circumstances and specify actions in the field of social protection services and benefits that result in a significant increase in resources and technical and economic means that respond to the unsustainable and real situation in which thousands of hundreds of Lorca live.
