The City Council of Lorca and Hostelor are launching a campaign to promote the recycling of glass containers in the hotel industry (31/10/2018)

The CEO of the Municipal Company Limusa, Juan Francisco Martínez, the Councilman of Commerce of the City of Lorca, Maria del Carmen Ruiz, and the president of Hostelor, Jesus Abellaneda, presented this morning a new awareness campaign to promote recycling of glass containers in the hospitality industry.

Juan Francisco Martínez pointed out that "the City Council of Lorca, in collaboration with the Professional Hoteliers Association of the town, has launched an awareness campaign aimed at restoration professionals with the aim of promoting the recycling of glass. This has been programmed, starting on November 5, a calendar of visits to all catering establishments in the areas of Lorca Plaza, Virgen de las Huertas, Álamo, Avenida Europa and La Viña to promote the recycling of packaging waste from glass in the hospitality industry and make effective the municipal ordinances that force these large generators to properly manage their waste ".

The CEO of Limusa has indicated that "to carry out this initiative, a fieldwork will be launched to reinforce the knowledge of the municipal ordinances regarding the recycling of glass containers." In the same way, awareness will be promoted on the environmental benefits that recycling generates for the city of Lorca ".

Martinez added that "the campaign will report on the current municipal ordinances, which include the obligation to recycle for large generators, after a first phase of information and detection of needs, in which cubes of different capacities will be delivered to facilitate recycling. waste of glass containers according to the volume of generation of each establishment, audits will be carried out to verify that they correctly perform the separation at source and, in case they do not follow the regulations, they will be given a nominative letter explaining the infringement in which they would be incurring, and their corresponding sanction typified. "

María del Carmen Ruiz, meanwhile, stressed that "from the City of Lorca we believe and support this type of campaign in which the whole society is involved to improve the image of our city." Data collection of glass in Lorca

The initiative aims to improve the management and increase by 15% the selective collection of glass packaging waste in the city.

In the year 2017, Lorca recycled more than 1,300 tons of waste from glass containers, equivalent to an annual average of 14.1 kilos per citizen.

In the municipality there are 530 containers, one for every 174 inhabitants.

The hospitality sector generates almost 50% of the waste of single-use glass containers that are marketed in Spain, it is a key sector for the achievement of recycling objectives.

Therefore, moving forward in the implementation of sustainable habits in the sector represents a significant improvement in the fight against climate change.
