IU demands that the rent subsidies for those affected by earthquakes not be capped for 72 months (06/11/2018)

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martin, has requested that the central and regional governments extend the maximum period of 72 months that the victims of the earthquake have to benefit from the rent subsidies, under the new agreement signed on June 26. October by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and the President of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras.

Martín explained that the fine print of the collaboration agreement establishes that the "maximum period" in which those affected can receive aid for rent is 24 months for homes totally destroyed, and 12 months in the case of repair works.

Deadlines that may be subject to extension in exceptional situations and provided that the Joint Commission expressly authorizes it, without, in any case, exceeding a maximum period of six years (page 8).

However, Royal Decree-Law 6/2011, of 13 May, which adopts urgent measures to repair the damage caused by earthquakes, provides that the rental aid for people who have to face the demolition of their home usual, "are renewable until the reconstruction of the house or the provision of a new one is possible".

Martín has warned of this situation after several families who benefit from these rent subsidies have informed them that in the earthquake office they are told that they can no longer apply for them "because they have reached the maximum of 72 months allowed".

"Murcia and Madrid can not sign an agreement that contravenes the provisions of the Royal Decree, or extend it until December 31, 2019 without contemplating that, until that same date, those affected may prove that, for reasons beyond their control, they have not been able to return to their homes because reconstruction work continues, they can continue to receive that help, "said Martín.

"The agreement should not only serve to pay those affected to which the Administrations owed aid, but to help families who still need the support of the administrations because there are still buildings under construction," said the councilor of IU-Greens.

This problem affects, among others, the neighbors who have not yet been able to recover their homes, such as the families of the neighborhood of San Fernando, or those of the buildings 'Los Almendros' or 'Portugal'.

Martin demanded that "both" clarify and stop "dizzy" to those affected.

He also regretted that Izquierda Unida must continue to "fight" for the victims of the earthquake because the official bodies "are unable to give coherent answers or to watch over the rights of these neighbors," he concluded.
