The Medieval Synagogue of the Jewish quarter of Lorca opens a new musealisation (16/11/2018)

207,834 euros have been invested to allow a more comfortable access to all people wishing to contemplate the only synagogue in Spain that did not host any other use after the departure of the Jews from the country.

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, together with the Minister of Culture of the Regional Government, Miriam Martínez, supervised this morning the entry into service of the works executed for the musealization of the medieval Synagogue of the city, found thanks to the works of construction of the existing Tourist Parade in the vicinity of the castle.

We are talking about a decisive step forward that contributes to explain the importance of this temple and the relevance of the Hebrew legacy existing in the Jewish quarter of the Lorca fortress.

For the development of the same 207,834 euros have been invested entirely by the food company Elpozo Murcia, a firm that demonstrated its commitment and generosity with the municipality leading the contributions for the recovery of the monumental heritage of the city, seriously damaged by the serious effects of the earthquakes of the year 2011. This donation was channeled through the patronage line opened for that purpose by the City Council.

The approximate area that has benefited from the intervention that has been developed covers a total area of 214.80 m2.

The First Edil explained that the works carried out have been aimed at the musealization of the Lorca Synagogue and the archaeological remains found in the same site.

Among the actions carried out, we can highlight:

1. Construction of a walkway to visit the preserved Jewish heritage, enabling a structure made of metal, with wood and glass floors.

This resource has been executed to cover the largest possible number of rooms and offer a comprehensive and understandable view of the remains, being partially accessible by ramp.

At the opposite end of the access to the site, the highest point, there is a lookout platform to improve the perception of the remains.

2. Location of an exhibition area with panels and showcases next to the entrance space, and behind the tramex windows.

It is integrated by glass panels with explanatory vinyls and back lighting.

These supports allow the optimization and ordering of space to favor museum discourse in three large areas.

This area has been improved significantly, providing greater lighting, wooden flooring, as well as allowing the location of display cases in each of the areas in which it is distributed.

3. The showcases have been designed so that their section allows to maintain the existing ventilation through the tramex windows and to avoid the entry of water by the combined effect of rain and wind.

At the same time, being composed of metallic carpentry and glass, they allow the entry of natural lighting.

Next to the entrance, a room has been adapted for viewing projections, providing a large television (86 ") and seating for the visitor.

It should be noted, in addition, that the intervention has been used to provide better lighting to the enclosure by LED lights of last generation, located in the high areas and by strips of this same technology placed behind the glass.

Progress is made in a better museumization of the site through the installation of its own evacuation and fire protection system.

Lorca, gateway to Sefarad.

It should be noted that Lorca has presented an ambitious project of history, photographs and videos to join the Network of Jewish Quarters '' Caminos de Sefarad ''.

The city is postulated as a main candidate thanks to its Jewish past and the existence of important archaeological remains that join the exhibition "Lights of Sepharad" and the itinerant exhibition "Footprints of Jewish Culture", which has toured important cities related to the Jewish area such as Lucena, Toledo, Ávila or Córdoba, members of the Jewish Network of Spain, among others.

It was in 2003 when the Lorca Synagogue was discovered, accompanied by the appearance of significant elements such as the janukkía, facts that made possible the identification of the Jewish quarter of Medieval Lorca, located in the eastern part of the castle, with a complex synagogue, given the existing relationship between the synagogue building and a house.

In particular, the dating of the Synagogue building corresponds to the first half of the 15th century, when the population grew considerably and it became necessary to build a building that could meet the needs of that group.

The importance of these findings on the Jewish presence in Lorca, resulted in the exhibition "Lights of Sepharad", which opened in 2009 in Murcia, having visited the Spanish capital in 2015. In addition, 3 of the ritual lamps discovered in The excavations of the Synagogue were part of the exhibition entitled "Bibles of Sefarad" which was held at the National Library of Spain in Madrid.

The existence of these important archaeological remains has had a positive impact on the City of the Sun, including, among other events, the organization of visits from Jerusalem and Jewish institutions around the world, including the Chief Sephardi Rabbi of Israel.

With the same purpose of spreading this discovery, the City Council organized the itinerant exhibition "Footprints of the Jewish Culture", which has visited important cities related to the Jewish area such as Lucena, Toledo, Ávila or Córdoba, members of the Jewish Network of Jewish Spain.

Specifically in our city, a Jewish Culture Festival has been organized since 2013, "Jewish Festival", which in collaboration with Casa Sefarad, offers the union of culture and leisure in a unique setting such as the Castle of Lorca.

It is also worth noting the participation for some years in the European Day of Jewish Culture, and the activities carried out in Cordoba on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of its Synagogue.
