Representatives of the Integrated Center of Training and Agricultural Experiences (Cifea) of Lorca, under the Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, have participated in a training course on animal welfare organized by the European Commission in the Swedish city of Malmö.
The aim of the course was to improve the professional skills of the personnel participating in the official control activities on animal welfare in the European Union, promoting a common understanding and interpretation of the rules applicable to the production of poultry, as well as the exchange of good practices among the member states with regard to control in livestock farms during transport and related operations, and in slaughterhouses.
The methodology of the course has been theoretical and practical, and aspects related to current regulations in the EU have been addressed, such as the Directive on the protection of chickens destined for meat production, as well as the recommendations for action to ensure its correct application. .
It has also included visits to farms and slaughterhouses, in which the animal welfare assessment protocol has been carried out in the field, as well as simulated practices on proposed cases, in which the participants have shared the knowledge acquired.
The content of the course has highlighted the importance of animal welfare and its close relationship with aspects such as biosecurity, public health, quality and food safety.
