The Civil Guard recovers 80,000 archaeological pieces found in an industrial building in Lorca (31/01/2019)

At the expense of its study and analysis, they are originated from excavations carried out in different municipalities of the Region of Murcia

It has counted with the collaboration of the Historical Heritage Service of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia

The Civil Guard of the Region of Murcia, in collaboration with the Historical Heritage Service of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia (CARM), has developed the operation 'VASSAN', an investigation framed in the 'Plan for the Defense of the Heritage Historical Spanish 'that has been settled with the recovery of 80,000 archaeological pieces in an industrial warehouse, without work activity for years, located in the municipality of Lorca.

The investigation began last June, when agents specializing in Historical Heritage of the Benemérita located, in an industrial building in the municipality of Lorca, thousands of archaeological pieces, ceramic, metal and bone mostly fragmented, all of which was brought to the attention of the competent bodies of the Autonomous Community in cultural matters.

From then on, and in collaboration with technicians from the Historical Heritage Service of the Autonomous Community, the necessary steps were taken to identify their owners and the subsequent technical inspection of the materials.

As a result of the investigations carried out, the identity of the owners of the establishment was ascertained, a banking entity that facilitated access to its interior.

The examination of the site allowed the discovery of hundreds of plastic bags and a large number of boxes filled with this type of material, as well as several bone pieces scattered on tables and boards.

The researchers found out that, due to their characteristics and chronology, they could have come from various archaeological excavations that would have been inconclusive when the labor activity had ceased, the company that was carrying out the various interventions at that time.

The industrial ship remained, since then, in a process of bankruptcy and public auction.

This fact caused the paralysis of all the bureaucratic procedures required by the public administration and that are required for the delivery of said material to the competent bodies.

According to the investigation, the excavations would have taken place in different Murcian locations at the beginning of the current decade.

From Prehistory to the Contemporary Age

The report prepared by technicians of the Historical Heritage Service has made it possible to verify that the material intervened is of a varied chronological scope that would go through the calcolithic, argaric, Iberian, Roman, medieval periods until arriving at the Contemporary Age, among which funerary trousseaux stand out, metals, useful in flint and stone polished as axes of prehistoric age, knives of back and arrows, as well as ceramic vessels.

The huge number of pieces has been deposited in warehouses dependent on the General Directorate of Cultural Assets to be treated by experts in the field and conclude the work that began a few years ago.

The VASSAN operation has culminated with the recovery and making available to the authorities more than 80,000 archaeological pieces that, after being inventoried, studied and analyzed, will become part of the museum collections of our Region.
