IU requests that the City Council provide street training to young Lorca as an alternative to sedentary lifestyle and gambling (07/02/2019)

Gloria Martín said that it is necessary that the local administration encourages physical activity among young Lorca to offer healthy leisure alternatives.

"We are saddened by the proliferation of gambling and betting facilities in front of the institutes and that, on the other hand, boys and girls do not have spaces where they can engage in sports," he said.

The councilor of Izquierda Unida Verdes in the City of Lorca, Gloria Martin, has asked the municipal government team to adapt the parks and green areas of the municipality to the needs and demands of young Lorca to offer healthy leisure alternatives.

Martín has echoed numerous petitions received in his municipal group so that the Consistory facilitates the practice of street training (in English street workout), a socio-sporting movement on the rise that is based on training in public spaces.

For this, it is necessary to install circuits that include bars and structures similar to those used in gyms, as well as urban furniture that allows the practice of pull-ups, squats, sit-ups, push-ups and all kinds of street training exercises.

The IU councilor assured that Street Workout circuits gain popularity day by day and asked that Lorca not be left out of this trend to which have joined many municipalities that are already modernizing their outdoor sports facilities.

"Many young people can not afford to pay for a gym, so we believe that the City could offer free training spaces, thus promoting positive and healthy values," said Martín.

For the councilor of Izquierda Unida it is necessary that the local Administration encourage physical activity among young Lorca to fight sedentary lifestyle and offer healthy leisure alternatives.

"We are saddened by the proliferation of gambling and betting facilities in front of the institutes and that, on the other hand, boys and girls do not have spaces where they can" get hooked "to the sport.

Martín said that the increase in online gambling and betting houses is a real trap for the youngest and that they are becoming the "heroine" of the 21st century.

In this regard, he recalled that gambling is a disorder recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and that its consequences are alarming not only for the person who suffers, but for their family environment.

The victims of the game suffer from sadness, social isolation, school absenteeism, loss of performance or thefts between family or colleagues, even suicide.

Therefore, it is essential that from the public administrations alternatives to this "terrible threat" be provided, Martín concluded.
