The councilor of Izquierda Unida Verdes, Gloria Martín, lamented that no institution or cultural event of Lorca is included in the ranking of the most valued proposals in the Region of Murcia, according to the report of the Observatory of Culture for 2018.
Since 2009, the Contemporary Foundation conducts an annual consultation among experts to develop a series of indicators related to the cultural activity of the different cities of the Region, highlighting the most relevant cultural institutions and events of the year.
Again, Lorca does not appear in a ranking that does include Cartagena (with 'La Mar de Músicas', the Jazz Festival, the International Film Festival and the Roman Theater Museum);
Murcia (with the Teatro Circo, the Warm Up Festival, the Romea Theater, the Víctor Villegas Auditorium and the Párraga Center);
San Javier (with the International Jazz Festival);
The Union (with the International Festival of Cante de las Minas);
and Caravaca (with the exhibition 'Mystics').
For Gloria Martín this is an evident proof of the "poor" commitment of the municipal government team of the PP for the culture in our municipality, which means that "we are relegated to the most absolute irrelevance" with respect to Murcia and Cartagena.
The mayor has lamented that the lack of innovation, ideas and investments have as a result that, despite being the third most important city in the Region, all the potential of Lorca in this area is wasted.
From United Left have returned to denounce the "complete apathy" of the City council in the promotion of initiatives of cultural character, "that must attend to the criteria of quality and innovation".
Also, Martin has claimed greater institutional support for local creators in different disciplines, supporting the inclusion of Lorca artists in cultural programming and making public places available to them so they can develop their artistic and creative work.
"Lorca needs to take a radical turn of 180 degrees in its cultural policy," said Martin, who recalled that Lorca culture should be "our best ambassador and a tourist attraction pole for the municipality."
