The regional government requires the state to extend the deadline to the residents of Lorca to rebuild their homes damaged by earthquakes (12/02/2019)

The Joint Commission of the Earthquakes approves the concession of third extensions to the rent to continue helping the neighbors that reside outside their houses while they finish the works of rehabilitation

The regional government demanded today the Government of Spain to give an "urgent solution" to the families of Lorca and extend the deadline so that they can complete the reconstruction of their homes, which are still in the construction phase, as well as those buildings that will soon they will be demolished.

This situation affects 411 Lorca families.

The Minister of Development and Infrastructure, Patricio Valverde, explained, during the meeting of the Joint Commission for the Earthquakes of Lorca, that "the families of Lorca have had to overcome great difficulties to be able to execute the reconstruction of their homes", how to obtain the agreement of the owners to repair common elements or the delay in the resolution of the claims by the Insurance Compensation Consortium and, therefore, pointed out, "they are out of their homes because they are still rebuilding their buildings".

"The current deadline is not enough for families in Lorca to finish their works and it is essential that the Government of Spain offers an immediate response to this situation", by means of the specific modification of Royal Decree-Law 6/2011, of May 13 that fixed in 24 months the maximum period of execution of the work.

In his opinion, "the central government should give a quick solution to a simple question such as extending the execution period of the works", and stressed that, "otherwise, it would force families to have to return public aid from reconstruction together with the corresponding interests ".

A total of 1,408 families have benefited from the aid for the construction of their homes that were granted by the Mixed Commission, with a total amount of more than 23.5 million euros, co-financed at 50 percent by the Autonomous Community and the State.

Likewise, the head of the Ministry of Development and Infrastructure asked the State to condone the families of Lorca with the delay interest of the repair aid, corresponding to the state tranche of the subsidy, and which exceeds 420,000 euros.

For Valverde, "the central government gives unfair treatment to Lorca" and asked that "do the same as the Government of Lopez Miras and condone the interests", a measure that was included in the General Budgets of the Autonomous Community of 2018.

In this regard, 400 beneficiaries of the repair aid have already presented the report justifying the works and have received a letter in which they are informed of compliance with the documentation.

Third extensions to the rent

The Joint Commission approved today the concession of third extensions to the rent to the neighbors of Lorca to help them to pay the monthly rents of the houses in which they reside while they finish the works of rehabilitation or reconstruction of their homes.

This extension of the subsidy "is possible thanks to the signing of the agreement that we claim from the State and that we signed recently, with a global allocation of 10 million euros," said Valverde.

In addition, the Mixed Commission granted 23 rental aids, worth 160,000 euros, and reported that there are another 20 pending files that the beneficiaries submit documentation, which would add another 140,000 euros.
