IU demands specific policies for the almost 16,000 young people in Lorca (19/02/2019)

Gloria Martín said that it is very sad that the main leisure offer for Lorca's teenagers is to concentrate in the Plaza de Calderón on Fridays and Saturdays in the afternoon to eat a piece of pizza.

In the case of the districts, the alternatives for this social group are directly non-existent

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes in Lorca, Gloria Martín, has called for specific policies for young people in Lorca, "to meet their demands and initiatives."

A collective formed by 15,900 Lorca and Lorca between 15 and 29 years and on which Martin said that "it is one of the social groups insufficiently served by the City" because "nobody cares to listen to what they have to say."

Martín regretted the failure of the Popular Party to create a 'Youth Space', a multipurpose and multi-purpose center in which to develop programs of activities promoted and co-organized by the users of this municipal service.

The PP promised that this infrastructure, for which it was announced an investment of 1.5 million euros financed by the Autonomous Community and of which it was even put the first stone in January 2011, would come into operation in the middle of that same year.

I was going to house an exhibition hall, rehearsal rooms for all Lorca music bands, multipurpose room, cafeteria, hotel for youth groups that visit the city, classroom, computer room ... All this in a 1,200 meter building squares distributed in four floors and a basement and located on the Camino Marín "where today there is only one dusty site," said the mayor.

Therefore, through a motion that will defend the next Municipal Plenary, IU will demand that this project be resumed so that young Lorca can have their own space that guarantees not only their leisure but also opportunities to achieve a "humanizing and of personal growth "and to explore their talents.

In that sense, Martin said it is "very sad" that the main entertainment offer for teenagers Lorca is, today, concentrate in the Plaza de Calderon on Friday and Saturday afternoon "to eat a piece of pizza" .

In this regard, he denounced that, in the case of the districts, the alternatives are "directly non-existent".

The motion, with which IU claims "greater prominence" for young people in the municipality, contains other proposals such as the preparation and implementation of a participatory local Youth Plan or the adaptation of the parks and green areas of the municipality to offer healthy leisure alternatives and facilitate the practice of street training.

Likewise, it will urge the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, to reinforce the offer of vocational training courses of Basic Vocational Training (FPB) in the municipality, as a measure to combat early school leaving, since the Region of Murcia has the third highest rate of early educational abandonment in the whole country, 24%, only behind the autonomous city of Melilla and the Balearic Islands, which places it 6.2% above the national average according to the last Active Population Survey.

The mayor will also demand that the City Council undertakes the Municipal Housing Plan approved unanimously by the Municipal Plenary in June 2017 at the proposal of the Municipal Group of United Left-Greens "and of which we have not known anything more than a year and a half after".

Martín said that this is not the only breach of the promises of the PP related to the housing policy for young people.

And is that the PP also failed to implement the announced project of youth housing cooperatives that would establish the Youth Council of Lorca as a unique model of self-management.

Martín regretted that during the last corporate mandates, youth associations have not increased significantly and there has not been an increase in the number of affiliates to those already existing.

In addition, he assured that there is a verifiable discouragement in many youth groups that do not find support or motivating elements for their corporate participation in society, which he blamed on the lack of momentum on the part of the Youth Council.

Nor have direct actions focused on raising awareness and taking positions regarding the environmental problems that led to the direct participation of young people in the "Agenda 21 local" program, as also announced.

Another notable breach is the one referred to the creation of youth coffee centers, conceived as leisure centers for young minors.

"Not a single one has been set up, which shows the inefficiency of management in this area," Martín concluded.
