14 students from the employment workshops of the Local Development Department will rehabilitate the Chapel of the Miraculous Virgin, located in the San Francisco de Asís School (19/02/2019)

It remained reserved as a place of recollection and prayer inside the convent until the march of the monks in 1838 |

The Local Development Councilor in the City of Lorca, Sandra Martinez, reported that the City Council is going to rehabilitate the Chapel of the Miraculous Virgin, located in the San Francisco de Asís School.

It is an improvement project that will be carried out by a total of 14 students and 2 monitors of the Employment and Training Joint Program "Ágora" and of the corresponding Public Local Employment, for long-term unemployed.

They will be responsible mainly for work related to electricity (electrotechnical and telecommunications installations), as well as masonry, decorations and consolidation of the Workshop in wood and decorative works.

It is a chapel dating from the Franciscan era, on the seventeenth century, originally called "Chapel of the Third."

It was reserved as a place of recollection and prayer inside the convent until the monks left in 1838. It would be 20 years later, with the entrance to the Sisters of Charity building, when the cult of the Miraculous Virgin began, installing a image that was destroyed in the Civil War.

Currently a carving of the same advocation of the Valencian artist José Jerique (author also of the popular image of the Christ of the Blood, of the Incarnate Pass) presides over it.

Sandra Martinez has indicated that during the intervention in the Chapel of the Miraculous Virgin the masonry team is going to carry out the demolition of the existing marble base, as well as the part of the floor, also made of marble, for the realization of a tie in the front wall that allows ventilation.

Then proceed with the chopping of cement mortars in poor condition and its replacement by others made with lime mortars that allow the breathability of the wall.

The masonry work is finished with the realization of the drain and subsequent placement of the marble floor, leaving ventilation grilles for air circulation and the placement of the internally ventilated marble baseboard.

Once the base is finished, the grinding, grouting, polishing and polishing of the marble flooring will be carried out.

In addition, carpentry work will be carried out to adjust windows and reinforce existing furniture.

It will also be equipped with a new electrical and lighting system.

The replacement of the wiring is proposed, adapting it to the current regulations and the placement of new low-consumption Led luminaires or projectors, giving the chapel a better lighting efficiency.

With regard to the intervention phase, the study, consolidation and reintegration of the paintings of the chapel will proceed, after cleaning of cracks and fissures in walls and vaults, by injection of lime mortars at low pressure and consolidation of the vaults of plaster.

The cleaning and consolidation of the main altar and altar table has been foreseen, through the replacement of disappeared and gilded volumes with gold leaf.

The images will also be improved, making the reintegration of missing elements, cleaning, chromatic consolidation and final protection.

The Local Development Mayor wanted to thank the San Francisco de Asis School "the opportunity that is given to the students of the different employment workshops involved in this initiative, since they entrust the City Council with the restoration of this chapel of high sentimental value The total investment, between material and labor, amounts to 86,000 euros and has an execution period of 10 months. It should be noted that the investment in materials is the responsibility of the San Francisco de Asís cooperative as well as the Association of Antiguas Students of the School ".
