El Coso de Sutullena de Lorca will become a multipurpose space that will allow the cultural, social and festive dynamization of Lorca (21/02/2019)

Thanks to an investment by the Autonomous Community of more than 1.7 million euros, within the Master Plan, this emblematic monument will be recovered, called to become a benchmark for local life.

Once contracted the work, the term of execution of the remodeling will be around 12 months

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, together with the Minister of Tourism and Culture of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, Miriam Guardiola, made known on the night of yesterday the recovery project of the Coso de Sutullena de Lorca in a classroom of culture of CajaMurcia packed with bull enthusiasts, neighbors and representatives of social groups in the municipality.

The mayor stressed that "it is a historic moment for the city of Lorca, which means the recovery of its square and its value after the earthquakes of May 2011. But what we present is not a simple recovery, but It is an ambitious project that aims to turn the Coso de Sutullena into a tool for the cultural, social and leisure dynamization of our city. The plaza is a symbol, it is a monument, but now it is going to be a multipurpose space that multiplies the cultural agenda and enriches initiatives of great value ".

The architects who wrote the project explained that the damage caused by the earthquakes was huge, so the reform will start with the consolidation and recovery, adapting the space to the new cultural regulations and public spaces.

This will modernize the services and functions, relocating vomitories, improving and expanding the accesses and significantly increasing the comfort of the locations, both the layout and the box, making it a versatile, functional and very comfortable scenic space, even if it supposes a loss of capacity.

All this modernization will be done without affecting the aesthetics of the square, trying to make the appearance resemble as much as possible to its original state, for which the non-damaged elements will be reused.

But beyond the actions of all kinds that can accommodate, the Coso de Sutullena is going to stand out for its versatility, hosting up to 4 spaces of different sizes that can be used both for trade and for the hotel trade;

they can use the ring, which will increase its attractiveness, but will also facilitate its use by Lorca and the visit by tourists.

The access can be made directly from the outside with the particularity that the structure of the square itself will be used to increase the attractiveness of the premises, in which there will be a window that will lead directly to the alley.

They will also be connected to each other through a circular ring.

In the transformation it is intended to musealize part of the coso, offering the visit to the chapel or the infirmary, among other spaces of value.

There will also be a walkway on the toriles so that fans can go to see the horses that will be bullied before the bullfight.

The Bullfighting Club of Lorca will also have a permanent location for the development of its activities and meetings.

Among the improvements we must highlight the security and accessibility measures, the dressing rooms and the preparation of all relevant technological systems for the realization of musical, cultural or sporting events.

Once the leftovers for renewal are contracted, the execution period will be around 12 months.

Historical review of a centennial coso

The negotiations for the construction of this property began at the end of 1891 on plans of the architect Justo Millán and its inauguration took place on June 29, 1892, with cattle ranch of the Duque de Veragua that the right-handers Rafael Molina "Lagartijo", Antonio Reverte and Rafael Guerra "Guerrita".

The works of restoration of the coso were carried out, with the same strictures of the postwar period, between 1941 and 1945, year this in which it returned to work with an inaugural run celebrated the 2 of September.

He led the recovery works as architect Daniel Carbonell, as a surveyor José Vallejo and the company responsible for the reconstruction was Mato Alberola.

Practically all the interior work had to be redone or retouched, completely renewing the grandstand and the entrances and losing in that reform the upper balcony.

The roof of the upper tier that today exists was built on two sides, also pouring into the interior of the square.

After its reopening, the Coso de Sutullena has continued to fulfill its role as a bullfighting arena, adding the ideal place for the celebration of many other shows such as movies, musical performances, large concerts, horseback riding, equestrian exhibitions and hooks, sporting events of all kinds, trade fairs, reception of authorities and personalities, and celebration of multitudinous events in general that have turned it into a true polyvalent and multipurpose enclosure, providing important services to the Municipality, alive and present in the memory of many Lorca.

The 2011 earthquakes restored the Plaza de Toros to a state similar to that which it presented after the end of the civil war.

Some urgent actions were taken to avoid damage to the public road and the collapse of some parts of the building, while waiting for some necessary recovery and improvement works.

It has grade 2 protection and is located in a privileged space just a few meters from the urban center of Lorca, in the Alamedas.

In June 2018 was acquired by the City of Lorca so that all Lorca were the owners of such a valuable monument.

To make possible the restoration, the Autonomous Community will invest more than 1.7 million euros, within the Master Plan for the Recovery of the Cultural Heritage of Lorca.
