The avenue of Europe of Lorca will connect with the university campus through semi-pedestrian boulevards (04/03/2019)

The president of the Community, Fernando Lopez Miras, explained today, during the visit made to the remodeling works of the Lorca avenue of Europe, that "this main artery of the city will be connected to the campus of Health Sciences through of different semi-pedestrian boulevards, which will improve the connection also to the San Diego station ", where the future commuter train station of the city is expected to be located.

Specifically, the streets of Puente de Churra, Asturias, Castilla, the Paseo de Guerra, Galicia Street and Navarra Street, which connect the avenue of Europe with the Avenue of the Armed Forces, where the university campus is located, will be semi-pedestrianized. .

In addition, two roundabouts will be built at the two main intersections, specifically at the intersection of Avenida Europa with Dolores Blaya Cueto street and access road III to San Diego station, and another at the confluence with Puente de Churra street and street Molina de la Sierra.

In total, a comprehensive renovation in which the regional government makes an investment of 3 million euros and will benefit about 2,500 residents, as it will improve accessibility and connection with the rest of the city.

In addition, the area will be revitalized by enabling the development of more social activities and opening new opportunities to the establishments, while it will have a bicycle lane, renovated spaces, infrastructures, equipment and services with innovative energy efficiency criteria along the lines of smart cities, "converting the avenue of Europe into a much larger and more modern area" model within this new Lorca, "said Lopez Miras.

"This is a clear sign that the recovery of Lorca is already unstoppable and that is a reality," said Lopez Miras, who recalled that in a few days will also proceed to the handing over of keys to residents of the neighborhood of San Fernando, specifically to the 232 families that were affected in this area by the 2011 earthquakes.

He also advanced that soon the works of the San Antonio neighborhood will be awarded, which will mean the reordering of traffic at the exit of Lorca towards Águilas, "something that is very necessary," said the president, who said that Lorca is "a city with a great past, a present of which we are very proud but, above all, a city with a great future, "said the president.

More mobility

The works on the avenue of Europe will encourage cyclist traffic to comply with the European 2020 targets, which establish a 20 percent reduction in CO2 emissions, an energy saving of 20 percent and the promotion of renewable energies.

The bike lane of the avenue of Europe will be continued to connect with the section made in San Diego and the avenue of the Armed Forces and will also link with the San Diego train station.

In addition, a network of cycle paths will be created, which will allow linking with the different neighborhoods.

The action also includes the improvement of the existing networks, with a separative network of rainwater and the burial of aerial crossings of the wiring, and the improvement of energy efficiency with the change of the current luminaries by other LED type to promote the saving 30 tons per year.

The works, which cover an area of ​​about 110,000 square meters, will provide spaces for leisure and enjoyment of neighbors, such as the creation of a large esplanade along the right bank of the San Diego station and the remodeling of the Canal de San Diego.
