The municipal heritage conservation workshop starts work in the Plaza del Rey Sabio to restore the popular Cruz de Humilladero in front of the patron church (25/03/2019)

The municipal services were in charge of recovering the fragments of this religious symbol that came out at the end of September of last year.

Once the tasks in the Consistory's facilities are completed, the replacement of all its elements is undertaken.

The Mayor of Lorca, Fulgencio Gil, has supervised this morning the works that are being executed in the Plaza del Rey Sabio, in the neighborhood of the Virgen de las Huertas, with the aim of restoring the popular Cruz del Humilladero.

The First Edil explained that this is an intervention undertaken by the Department of Local Development through its Heritage Conservation Workshop that follows the line of actions that are being developed aimed at conservation, restoration and increase of heritage artistic and cultural of the municipality.

The works of restoration of this well are being executed from November of 2018, being already realized the tasks of consolidation and restoration of the Tuscan capital and the carving of a new cross in natural stone, to imitation of the original one of pometeado type.

The Cruz de Humilladero of Real de la Huerta de Lorca is composed of a pomegranate-free cross that rests on a Tuscan capital, with a fluted column shaft in the upper two thirds, base, pedestal of inverse éntasis and steps formed by three steps.

It is a symbol erected in 1714 to consecrate the atrium of the Convent of the Virgen de las Huertas.

In 1992, within the works of adaptation of the atrium of the Convent of the Virgen de las Huertas, approached by the City Council, it was already restored.

But on September 25, 2018 the shaft of the column fractured, precipitating the fall of the upper part of the shaft, capital and cross.

We are talking about elements that were seriously damaged and that were carefully collected and deposited in the Heritage Conservation Workshop located in La Torrecilla, for later restoration.

In fact we must remember that already in October 2018 the Municipal Council announced that it would proceed to the settlement and replacement of this unique element.

Apart from the damage suffered, the whole presents serious problems of sandstones and loss of volumes due to the type of sandstone used.

So once the deteriorated elements are restored, they will intervene in the whole, proceeding to the consolidation and restoration of the column, pedestal and bleachers conserved in their original place.

We will proceed, in addition, to the installation of the original capital restored and the new cross, having foreseen a general final treatment of consolidation and protection.

The crosses of humilladero constitute a religious symbol generally presented in tiers of circular or polygonal plant on which a shaft rises topped in knot, tiller or capital, which supports the stone cross carved in stone.

In this specific case, the cross was erected in 1714 to consecrate the atrium of the convent of the Virgen de las Huertas due to the fair held there until the middle of the 19th century.

The students of this workshop have also made possible the restoration of the stature of the Blessed Virgin of Mercy, of Paso Morado, and for the faithful of the Church of San José they have materialized a new carving of Our Lady of the Aurora, as well as the restored sculptures of the barrio patron and of Cristo Crucificado.
