The square of the Professional Music Conservatory Narciso Yepes and the Church of San Pedro have hosted this morning the events organized by the City of Lorca, Fundación Secretariado Gitano and Fundación el Gigante to celebrate in our city the International Day of the Gypsy People.
From the City Council of Lorca we have acquired the commitment to promote the recognition of the culture, language, history and cultural heritage of this ethnic group, since a large part of the gypsies still live today in situations of serious inequality, exclusion and segregation , regarding the whole of the citizenship.
For this reason, and in collaboration with Fundación Secretariado Gitano and Fundación el Gigante, we have carried out numerous events with the aim of recognizing the Roma as an inherent part of our society and eliminating the inequality gap that this ethnic group has with respect to the rest of the citizens.
In the plaza of the Professional Conservatory of Music an institutional act has been carried out where a manifesto has been read and the flag and anthem has been raised.
It is worth remembering that the flag of the gypsy people is green and blue, symbolizing the sky and the countryside, with a red car wheel in the center, which symbolizes the road from India and freedom.
The gypsy hymn, Gelem, gelem (Anduve, anduve), was composed by Jarko Jovanovic and remembers the gypsies and gypsies victims of Nazism.
On the other hand, the Church of San Pedro has hosted the technical conference "Gipsy Community in Lorca, for networking: Panel of experiences of social entities" which has aimed to make the first joint action of all social entities working in this collective of Lorca, and on the other hand to improve the coordination between the actions that are being carried out. The participants have been: Fundación Iniciativas el Gigante, Red Cross, Cáritas Interparroquial, Fundación Cepaim, Cazalla Intercultural, CEIP Casa del Niño, CEIP San Cristóbal and technicians from the Department of Equality and Family and Social Welfare.
It should be noted that the celebration of the International Day of the Gypsy People set on April 8 commemorates the first Roma / Gypsy World Congress held in London on April 8, 1971, in which the flag and the gypsy anthem were instituted.
