IU denounces that the PP has left to die the tables of conciliation of the orchard and the Highlands (09/04/2019)

The councilor of this training, Gloria Martin, said that it is the responsibility of the City to promote agreements to reconcile the residential and livestock uses of land in the municipality, so he regretted that the corporate mandate will be completed without progress "not even a millimeter "to solve the problem of neighbors who live close to farms of up to 2,000 head of cattle, rafts of slurry and pits of corpses

The councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes, Gloria Martin, has demanded that the PP municipal government team comply with the Plenary agreement on the reactivation of the Mesa for the conciliation of the garden, approved in May 2018, almost a year ago.

Martín recalled that following the pressure exerted by Izquierda Unida and the citizen platform 'Stop cebaderos next to the houses', the City Council launched in June 2016 the Conciliation Commission of the Huerta, which was frustrated after the PP proposed the approval of a municipal ordinance that increased only 5 to 15 meters the distance between homes and macro pig farms.

Thanks to another motion approved on October 29, 2018 in the highest body of political representation of the City, another commission was launched, this time to address this problem limited to the Highlands of Lorca.

After meeting on only two occasions, this table was suspended until the celebration in early February of the Regional Pig Farming Forum.

However, "two months have passed and the PP has not had time to reconvene their representatives."

The mayor of IU said that it is "the responsibility of the City Council" to promote agreements to make compatible the residential and livestock uses of the land in the municipality, for which it regretted that it will conclude the corporate mandate without progressing "a millimeter" to solve the problem of neighbors who live close to farms of up to 2,000 head of cattle, rafts of slurry and pits of corpses.

Gloria Martín explained that this is a drama that affects residents of Tercia, Campillo, La Hoya or Pozo Higuera-La Campana, and is a "threat" in other parts of the territory.

In fact, in recent months the authorizations of the General Directorate for the Environment have been intensified for the projects for the expansion of bait pig farms.

Only in Almendricos the livestock hut has increased by 15,000 heads since 2017. The neighbors of Ortillo are also up in arms for the pretensions of building a new pig farm with capacity for another 15,000.

And to them we must add 4,000 more in Hinojar

"In Lorca there are six times more pigs than people," said Martín.

Specifically, 600,000 animals against a population of 92,000 inhabitants.

An industrial model that poses "serious problems in the environment and the health of people, in addition to subjecting many workers to conditions of labor exploitation," said Martin.

Therefore, he lamented "the lack of political will" of the municipal government team to agree on a "rational" territory planning through planning instruments that should serve to "reconcile the activity of the livestock industry with the constitutional right of people to health and to an adequate environment. "

"The PP has lost this situation of hands, they are absolutely out of control and have turned the City into a branch to serve only the interests of pig magnates in Lorca without caring about the health and environmental consequences that this will entail for the municipality, "said Martin, who explained that" UI's bet is a modification of the General Plan that limits the impact of this type of exploitation as many other municipalities are already doing ".
