City Council and Ecoembes promote an ambitious environmental action plan to increase the collection of containers in our city (10/05/2019)

In April the historical mark of monthly contribution has been beaten when exceeding 55,000 kilos |

Lorca City Council and Ecoembes, the non-profit environmental organization that coordinates the recycling of packaging throughout Spain, sign a collaboration agreement whose purpose is to join forces and establish actions in the field of environment and, in particular, regarding the recovery and recycling of packaging waste to increase the recovery of cans and brik type, corresponding to the yellow container, as well as to promote environmental awareness among Lorca society.

Ecoembes and the local executive have been developing joint actions in a timely manner in order to improve the rates of selective collection in the yellow container.

The balance of these initiatives has been reflected in the last 16 months with steady growth to beat the annual record in 2018 and reach the best monthly figure in its 20 years of implementation this past April with 55,120 kilos.

If this progression continues, Lorca would overcome the barrier of 7 kilos contributed per year by each of its inhabitants, practically twice as many as in 2011, making it the third consecutive year that grows at a rate of 1 kilo per inhabitant per year.

The collaboration that now opens aims not only to consolidate this recovery but also to set a message in environmental terms that will reach the goals required by the new European guidelines of the circular economy package approved in 2018 and whose provisions will have to be in force before the 5th. July 2020 to intensify the recycling of waste and contribute to the creation of a circular economy.

The new regulations establish measures for the recycling of municipal waste by 55% before 2025 (next year 50% will have to be reached), 60% by 2030 and 65% before 2035, and the reduction of deposit of landfill spills.

Specifically, this agreement establishes an action plan aimed at facilitating the contribution of this waste to citizens of the municipality of Lorca, the HORECA channel, and attendees of events, markets or sporting events, among others.

In addition, the design of actions related to services based on the logistics of collection of packaging and packaging waste, relations with local associations to raise awareness in all social sectors of the municipality of Lorca, and the dissemination of information on environmental issues, especially those related to circular economy and recycling of packaging.

One of the first measures adopted to achieve these objectives is the incorporation of 16 yellow and blue containers for the deposit of plastic containers, cans and briks, and cardboard and paper, respectively, so that this action is facilitated by putting them increasingly closer to the citizen in areas of contribution with the rest of containers already installed on public roads.

In addition, a container collection route is created in the old town by means of rear cargo containers, for the first time in Lorca, differentiating from the usual igloos that we can see in our streets.

In this way, it responds to a historic request of both citizens and businessmen, especially the hotel trade, which facilitates the work of recycling in an environment where the proliferation of containers is complicated due to its orography and significant urban landscape interest.

These actions will be deployed by the municipal company Limusa, so they will not involve obligations of economic content for the City of Lorca as it has the appropriate means to do so.
