IU-Lorca denounces the authorization of another swine macrogranja in Avilés (19/06/2019)

Gloria Martín announced that Izquierda Unida-Verdes will move a motion to the first municipal Plenary of the present corporate mandate to demand the punctual modification of the Municipal Ordination Plan and the suspension of construction licenses, both new construction and expansion or substantial reform, intensive livestock farms throughout the municipality of Lorca

Just a week after the councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes Lorca, Gloria Martin, denounced the intention to build two macrobreeding pigs in the hamlet of Doña Inés (177 inhabitants), this morning, residents of the neighboring council of Avilés (286 inhabitants) have alerted of the concession of an activity license for another exploitation of pigs of bait of 2,000 places.

The feedlot will be located in the area of the Old Bank, 98 meters from the police area of the Rambla de Avilés (the law requires that the police area includes one hundred meters from the Public Hydraulic Domain).

In addition, it will necessarily require the opening of a water well for the supply of animals and the cleaning of facilities, of which "we do not know if it has authorization from the Segura Hydrographic Confederation", said Martín.

In this regard, the councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes recalled that a feeder of these characteristics consumes around 22,000 liters of water per day, the equivalent of filling, daily, a pool of 6 x 5 m and a depth of two meters.

"The survival of the aquifer is being put at risk, regardless of the contamination of the soil and the subsoil," Martín warned.

The circumstance occurs that the Highlands of Lorca are deficient in water resources for its rainfed and ecological agriculture.

"It does not make sense to deny water to farmers in the area, who develop a sustainable and environmentally friendly activity, to benefit companies from outside the villages that come to deplete their natural resources to become increasingly rich ", Martin sentenced.

Therefore, Martin considered "a nonsense" that the activity has favorable reports from the general directorates of Irrigation and Rural Development and Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Regional Ministry of Agriculture and Water.

This exploitation will also make it unfeasible to open a rural hostelry, built in 2011, before the license processing of the hatchery, and which was scheduled to open after the summer.

"No tourist in his right mind would hire the rent of a rural house located less than 200 meters from a ship of 2,000 pigs and their corresponding pool of slurry," said Martin.

In this regard, the mayor recalled the damage that this type of macro exploitation makes to the survival of organic and rainfed agriculture, economic diversification, the fight against depopulation and the environment.

In this sense, Martin announced that Izquierda Unida-Verdes will move a motion to the first municipal plenary session of this corporate mandate to demand the timely modification of the General Plan for Municipal Planning and the suspension of building licenses, both new construction and expansion or reform substantial, of intensive livestock farms throughout the municipality of Lorca.

"It is time to stop this nonsense, stop to think about what kind of economy and planning we want for the people of our municipality, and that the different political groups are portrayed," he concluded.
