IU demands that the City of Lorca reinforce control of alcohol sales to minors (24/06/2019)

Gloria Martin explained that a large group of fathers and mothers have contacted their political training to report that, on the occasion of the celebration of the graduation acts of students of Compulsory Secondary Education, this weekend poisoning was detected ethics in boys and girls of 15 and 16 years

The councilor of IU-Greens Lorca, Gloria Martin, has asked the City Council to reinforce control of the sale of alcohol to minors, both in shops and nightlife.

Martin explained that during the day yesterday, a large group of parents and mothers got in touch with their political education to report that, on the occasion of the celebration of the graduation acts of the students of Compulsory Secondary Education, this end of week alcoholic intoxications were detected in boys and girls of 15 and 16 years.

The councilor of IU-Greens regretted that the bad practices of a few establishments damage the image of the hospitality sector.

"Most comply with the municipal ordinance that prohibits the sale or supply of alcoholic beverages to children under 18, but there is a minority that has no qualms about doing business with teenagers, even at the risk of playing with their safety and health" , said Martin.

In this regard, he recalled that this practice is classified as a "serious violation" in municipal regulations and can be punished with a fine of between 750 to 1,500 euros.

In addition, IU has urged the local government team to increase awareness programs on the dangers of alcohol abuse directed to the child and youth population of the municipality.

Martin recalled that alcohol consumption is associated with increased injuries, traffic accidents, unprotected sex, as well as academic failure.

In physiological terms, the early onset of alcoholic beverages leads to delays in neuronal maturation and is related to a higher risk consumption and alcohol dependence in adulthood.

"The intake of alcohol in minors is a serious risk that can lead to an ethyl coma resulting in death," said Martin.

For this reason, he asked for "responsibility" in the field of commerce and hospitality, as well as municipal policies that sanction the sale of alcohol to minors and affect the development of a healthy alternative leisure.
