Podemos-Equo urges the new government team in Lorca, to put the moratorium on the table, regarding the installation of pig farms (27/06/2019)

The general secretary of Podemos in Lorca, Francisco Campos and the spokesman of Equo in Lorca, José Fernández-Rufete, have presented allegations to the construction of a feedlot for 2,000 heads of pigs that is built in the hamlet of Doña Inés, located in the Casa Don Juan Pedro, and which affects a natural source of water, which is supplied by residents of the districts.

Francisco José Campos, urges the new team of Municipal Government of Lorca, to put on the table as a priority axis in these coming months, the moratorium on the construction of pig farms in the municipality.

It is necessary to know what livestock load can support our municipal term, what water resources we have available for this activity and how to create a sustainable model of livestock, both with the environment and with the possibility of rural development in other sectors.

Campos has indicated that the different sectors can and should coexist in a planned way, because it would mean an economic diversification for our municipality, which already has an important weight in the pig sector, but that must be compatible with other productive sectors and with the rich natural, ethnographic, archaeological or paleontological patrimony, among others, that it possesses and that supposes an important source of socioeconomic resources for the municipality.

That is why our municipality can not continue suffering the lack of planning that has led the previous Popular Party government, more concerned with creating a framework for expansion of the porcine lobby, than to address this problem in all its complexity.

Campos believes that, with the change of government, it is time to address a problem, which is entrenched, creating a social conflict between the sector and the neighbors who suffer the damage of the massive installation of macro farms in our municipality.

On the other hand, Pepe Rufete, spokesman of Equo in Lorca, has commented that it is necessary a controlled management of the already existing livestock, contributing measures that minimize the landscape impact, energy or water efficiency, and a rigorous study of the available hydrological resources, that until now has been nonexistent.

The magnitude of the sector, the labor precariousness it generates, the complexity of its infrastructures, the treatment of slurry and the enormous needs of water and energy make necessary management formulas that make them compatible with other land uses, the conservation of the environment and living conditions in our rural environment.

For all the above, from Podemos-Equo Lorca is understood as absolutely necessary the urgent establishment of a moratorium, which paralyzes the granting of new licenses for the construction and expansion of infrastructure for the rearing and fattening of pigs, as an essential step prior to be able to approach a productive model that is socio-economically more diversified, equitable and more sustainable.
