The councilor of IU-Greens Lorca, Gloria Martin has reported that for several weeks some people are abandoning puppies of dogs in boxes in the market that takes place on Sundays in the hamlet of Purias.
The mayor explained that it is the watchman of that market that is taking care of the animals.
Martín regretted the irresponsibility of the owners of the puppies and asked the City Council to give the pertinent instructions to the corresponding services so that this practice is investigated and sanctioned, which can entail a sanction of up to 30,000 euros under the Law of protection and defense of the companion animals of the Region of Murcia.
"If they do not have sensitivity towards animals, they may think twice when they know what they can do for their pocket," said Martín.
Martín has also requested that the Consistory promote awareness campaigns against animal abandonment, as well as awareness for the sterilization of pets to avoid the proliferation of litters of dogs and cats that can then be abandoned on the street.
"There are many city councils that launch citizen awareness campaigns against animal abandonment that occurs mainly during the summer months and Lorca should not be left behind," he said.
Martín also encouraged the councilor of the branch, José Ángel Ponce, to encourage actions aimed at adoption, "that in Lorca can be improved."
The mayor of IU-Greens also warned that the facilities used in Lorca to house lost or abandoned animals will become obsolete shortly, as the new contract for the collection and capture service, currently in tender, will contemplate the "sacrifice zero "that the regulation of the Law of Protection and Defense of Animals imposes.
"As there are many more animals that will have to be kept in care, we must anticipate this circumstance," said Martín.
The mayor of IU-Green recalled that this service has an annual cost of 90,786 euros for municipal coffers, which will be increased in the new contract.
In this regard, he regretted that the "irresponsibility of a few we have to pay among all with money that could be used to pay for a hundred annual scholarships for children of families with economic difficulties," he said.
"It is important that citizens become aware of animal abandonment because its consequences are dragged all", he concluded.
On the other hand, the councilor of Izquierda Unida-Verdes has also requested an increase in controls to check that pets are registered in the Animal Identification System of the Region of Murcia (SIAMU).
In this regard, he recalled that the municipal ordinance on the protection and possession of companion animals establishes that chipado of dogs is obligatory "without exceptions".
Failure to comply is considered a serious infraction and punishable by a fine of between 300 and 2,404 euros.
