"The environment in the Lorca region, a pending subject" (22/07/2019)

Antonio Segura Miras responsible for the ecology area of Somos Lorca Somos Región, has highlighted the poor quality of the air we breathe and its influence on climate change in Lorca, which denounces that the national, regional and local governments make little assessment of the problems and challenges that Spain and our region have to undertake to improve the biosphere in its different ecosystems.

No new spaces are forested and an adequate reforestation of the existing ones is not carried out, as well as the lack of maintenance (pest control, dry conifer, Tomicus detruens and thaumetopoeidae).

No measures are adopted to solve the pollution of natural areas, and environmental impact studies are not carried out, before developing activities in the natural environment.

Segura Miras, highlights the study carried out by the University of Murcia (UMU), in a matter of afforestation.

"Murcia and Almeria are the most arid, deforested areas with the highest risk of desertification in Europe" ... "The scarcity of forest mass increases exponentially the problem of pollution and climate change" (UMU and Fundación Nueva Cultura of the Aguay the CREAF, 12/2107).

Young trees are those that absorb more carbon dioxide (CO2) and solid and liquid microparticles (PM10).

Also the forest mass modifies the climate with the shade cooling the air.

And yet according to the National Forestry Institute (iNFOR, 2/2019), Lorca only has 1/3 of the minimum forest and vegetable mass suitable for a healthy environment, both urban and peripheral.

Such is the high level of pollution by tropospheric ozone in the city of Lorca, which puts at risk the development of a healthy and sustainable life.

Lorca has an ozone volume of 186 micograms / m3, when according to the European Legislation (92/72 / CCE) the maximum allowed is 110 Microg / m3 and yet, although it is mandatory for local administrations to inform the population , no anti-pollution protocol has been activated.

Another fact to be taken into account is the contamination by slurry from the Luchena River, (La Parroquia) and from the lorquino coast of Puntas de Calnegre (Poblado), highly contaminated by plastics.

Remember that We Are Lorca Region, organized a first cleaning of the space, with the intervention of associations, platforms and sports clubs such as the Hiking and Mountaineering Club Sigismondi, Lorca Biciudad, Ecologists in action, helping hands (IJSUD), and anonymous volunteering, with the collaboration of shops in Lorca and municipal cleaning company Limusa y Protección Civil.

The evidence of the lack of attention of our regional and local politicians for the health of their citizens is more than demonstrated.

From Somos Región Lorca, show our concern and we urge the Regional and Local Authorities to apply action measures to effectively tackle this serious problem that involves any type of contamination, such as the development of a specific pollution control plan, so that in our different ecosystems Lorca and the city improve our environment and the quality of life of those who inhabit it.
