Choirs and Dances of Lorca pays tribute to the patron saint of the city with a hand-embroidered mantle on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of her Canonical Coronation (03/09/2019)

The mantle, 2.10 meters wide and 1.75 meters long, is made of touch fabric, like the refajos that this folk group sports, embroidered entirely with wool of 36 colors.

A total of 967 hours of work have been invested.

The mayor of Lorca, Diego José Mateos, presented this morning, together with the president of Choirs and Dances of Lorca, Antonia Martínez and the Brotherhood of Santa María La Real de las Huertas, Isabel Jiménez, the new mantle that will wear the Patron from the city this Sunday, September 8, the day of its onomastics.

The mayor has pointed out that "this mantle that we present today with much affection and that the Virgin of the Huertas will wear in the main mass and during the procession, is a piece embroidered in wool like the traditional refajos, and is a gift from the Coros Group and Dances of Lorca ".

Diego José Mateos has stressed that "with this new garment the employer will look prettier if possible, and will do so on the day of her saint, in which from the early hours of the morning the Lorca and Lorca come to the employer's sanctuary to honor him" .

From the Brotherhood, its president Isabel Jiménez, has thanked this detail that Choirs and Dances has had with the patron of all Lorca.

On the other hand, Antonia Martínez, president of Choirs and Dances of Lorca said that "the project has been ambitious as well as exciting for all of us, from the outset with the approach of the first sketches and the choice of fabrics and wool ".

"It has been a long road, full of satisfaction, pride and devotion, which will culminate for us next Sunday, September 8, when we accompany our Patron in her procession, with her new mantle, on a throne that will be decorated by Choirs and Dances de Lorca, as we did 25 years ago, when we gave him another mantle on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of our creation, "said the president of Choirs and Dances of Lorca.

Martínez has detailed that "during October and December the mantle was drawn, on January 8 the frame was mounted and began to be profiled and on February 4 it began with wool embroidery, an embroidery that was finished last 11 June, after 967 hours of intense work. "

The mantle measures 2.10 meters wide and 1.75 meters long and is made of fabric, like the refajos that this folk group sports, embroidered entirely with wool of 36 colors.

The embroidery pattern is the three borders of a lorquino refajo surrounding the central motif, the Crown, which, although golden, is also embroidered in wool.

In addition to the central motif, in the front it bears the shield of the city of Lorca and the logo of Choirs and Dances of Lorca.

Under the Crown appears the legend of the motif of the gift of the mantle: "75th anniversary of the Coronation of the Virgin".

In the embroidery of this mantle six people have worked, five of them components of Choirs and Dances of Lorca, together with Eduardo Montesinos Pérez - Chirinos, former component and friend of Choirs and Dances of Lorca and to whom the technical direction of the same has corresponded.

In addition to the embroiderers, 64 components have been stitched in the mantle, including six children from our folklore school, who are learning to embroider.

Two dresses have also been embroidered to the Child, in "white and blue or blue and white", as well as a footstool matching the mantle.

From Choirs and Dances of Lorca they have thanked the City Council of Lorca "for supporting us in our work, also to the Brotherhood of Santa María La Real de las Huertas, for allowing us to be close to our Patroness and letting us boast proud of her in every corner of the world".
