IU-Verdes asks the City Council to promote the Protected Designation of Origin for the red thyme of the Highlands of Lorca (01/10/2019)

Councilwoman Gloria Martín will seek the unanimity of the municipal plenary to request the Ministry of Agriculture to initiate the file that can make this variety of aromatic and medicinal plant the first Lorca product that achieves this distinctive

After meeting yesterday with members of the Community of Irrigators Campo Alto, with producers of aromatic plants from the villages of the north of Lorca and with the directive of the Espartaria federation, the councilor of the United Left-Greens, Gloria Martín, will ask the Plenary Session of the City Council the creation of a Promotion Commission for the Designation of Origin Red Thyme of the Highlands of Lorca.

The intention of the councilwoman of IU-Verdes is to seek the support of the Municipal Corporation for the Ministry of Agriculture of the Region of Murcia to initiate the appropriate file in order to ensure that this product becomes the first in the municipality to achieve such a distinctive .

Martín explained that the red thyme that is grown in the Highlands has the characteristics necessary to enter the "select club" of products that are recognized as having a differentiated quality.

And this variety is linked to a particular and defined geographical environment, and has the natural and human factors required by this seal.

In fact, due to its high purity, the red thyme that is grown in Lorca is arousing a growing interest even in international markets such as the German or the American, where its essential oils are demanded by the cosmetics, perfumery or pharmacy industry .

Gloria Martín explained that aromatic plantations are an activity that can serve as a revulsive for the reactivation of the economy of unpopulated areas and that it is also a "good option" to guarantee generational relief in the field, while implementing initiatives of circular economy.

For the councilor of the United Left-Greens, the achievement of a PDO would mark "a before and after" in the economic development of these towns and would constitute a pride "for all of Lorca".

And, today, no Lorca product has a distinctive quality of these characteristics, despite the strong weight of the municipality in the agricultural sector.

In that sense, Martín explained that in the Region of Murcia about 3,500 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of aromatic and medicinal plants, which grow at a rate of 25% per year.

A large part of these plantations are concentrated in the high districts of Lorca (La Paca, Coy, Zarcilla de Ramos and Doña Inés), which leads the production, and also in the Northwest Region.

About 200 families in the area are dedicated to organic farming, production and sustainable transformation of aromatic plants.

Martín recalled that the Region of Murcia has three Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) linked to the Jumilla, Yecla and Bullas wine production and a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in this sector, that of "Wines of the Land Campo de Cartagena ", which covers wines produced in the municipalities of Cartagena, Torre Pacheco, La Unión and Fuente Álamo.

Other products such as the paprika from Murcia, the Calasparra rice, or the Ercolini de Jumilla pear also have PDO. In addition, the approval of the Melon PGI from Torre Pacheco and the PDO Grapes from Espuña is in process and the file is also being initiated. from IGP Peach from Cieza.
